Clerk Refuses to Serve Zendaya Because of Her Skin Tone
Actress, singer, and dancer Zendaya was reportedly refused service at a grocery store because of her skin color. Yes, let me repeat that; her skin color.
Yes, ladies and gentleman, we live in a world where problems like this still exist.
It all started when Zendaya was trying to purchase $400 in gift cards. While trying to purchase the items, the clerk told her that she couldn’t afford the gift cards and threw Zendaya’s wallet. The clerk was so persistent with the belief that Zendaya couldn’t afford the gift cards that the manager had to come out and allow her to pay for them.
Zendaya then informed fans of the incident through her Snapchat. She explained how there is in fact a limit on how many gift cards you can purchase and that she understands that. But the way that Zendaya was treated was what really affected her.
“The lady that was helping us. I don’t think she was a huge fan of our skin tone,” says the celebrity on her Snapchat story.
The grocery store sent out an apology to Zendaya, saying how sorry they are and how it was a misunderstanding . But that will never really change what happened at that store. It was a good thing that Zendaya spoke out about the situation. It brings awareness on the racial tension persisting and that needs to be dealt with in America.
This comes to show how strong racism persists. Zendaya has faced criticism for her recent role in Spiderman: Homecoming, being that her skin tone doesn’t match that of Mary Jane or Gwen. There are many cases in Hollywood where actors face hateful critics because of their skin color. For instance, Quvenzhaé Wallis. Despite being an Oscar nominee, the young actress was criticized and judged when she landed the role of Annie because she didn’t look anything like the curly haired ginger that audiences saw in 1982.
What’s it going to be like in the future? Will we progress from this hatred and negativity? It looks like we’ve only taken a tiny step forward from this situation. A person should not be defined based on their appearance. We must stop this.
“Long story short, there’s so much progress to be done in our world.” (-Zendaya)
Indeed, Zendaya. Indeed.
