Tallahassee's Fall Schedule Looks Grand
Florida State University celebrates the return of fall every year with a Seminole Sensation week, a sign of celebrations that leads up to our thrilling Homecoming Week (Chance the mothafuckin’ rapper!). This year is bigger and better than ever, with a slew of FSU sponsored events, and more happening around the city to do than in recent memory. Something many freshman aren’t aware of is the hustle and bustle outside the paved roads of FSU, where the city comes to life- theatre, art fairs, and concerts galore. Here’s a collection of just some that Tallahassee has to offer this fall.
- Avenue Q
For those already in town, Theatre Tallahassee’s summer has been rather successful with Sondheim’s Assassins. Their highly anticipated fall show, Avenue Q, opens just in time for the incoming students. A raunchy puppet debacle, which most call the adult Sesame Street, hits the stage August 18th and doesn’t close until September 4th.
- FAMU Grape Harvest Festival
August 27th will see FAMU’s College of Agriculture & Food Sciences showing off their national ranking with an insane slew of events billed such as, “grape stomping contest, a kids petting zoo, water slides, a grape throwing competition, a grape and wine sampling, a hula hoop competition, live entertainment, the 5K/2K vineyard run and walk-a-thon, grape picking, a health fair, and more than 60 community exhibitors and vendors.” Definitely not something to miss out on.
- FSU’s Sensation Week
The highest billed part of this list needs little description. Endless free food, recruitment, movies at the SLC, and a headlining show by Earl Sweatshirt. Check out FSU’s website for more information on this slam.
- Cat Fest
October 2nd will host a slew of kittens and food all over Railroad Square. A fundraiser and music event for animals. I’m not saying anything else.
- FAMU Homecoming
(Oct. 21st ) Florida State’s Homecoming can’t get any more hyped, with Chance the Rapper bringing his sell-out tour and an unannounced comedian on their way. But FAMU isn’t one to falter, and they’re bringing a triple threat to host their Homecoming concert- Fantasia, Bell Biv Devoe, and T-PAINNNNN (named after Tallahassee, after all). Want to bounce out to some classic R&B? Auto-tune king? American Idol winner (and queen)? FAMU has you, and seats are selling fast.
- Tallahassee Museum
One of Tallahassee’s best hidden gems is the Museum, down Lake Bradford and Orange, where you can enjoy a high-ropes course with zip lines over exotic animals. This location will be celebrating the students’ return on August 28th, with crazy discounts, but this place is recommended every day you’re in town (along with the nearby Rez!).
- Music
Club Downunder has set a wonderful line-up this fall. After Earl Sweatshirt, Watsky is swinging by. Tallahassee will host musicians such as Trina, Ice Berg, Alabama Shakes, and way too much to include in a post of this length. Keep your eyes peeled for posters, you never know who will turn up on a moment’s notice.
- 5K’s (Fishnet is Sept. 17th, , Prancing Pumpkin is Sept. 24th)
If you’re a fitness guru, Tallahassee always has you covered in fall. After Leach’s bustling recruitment week, check out fan-favorite Fishnet 5K, celebrating their fourth year. As winner of 2014′s Best Legs award, I can tell you competition is fierce. With that course rounding FSU’s campus on September 17th, you can also enjoy the Prancing Pumpkin nearby on September 24th.
- SLC (Fall Schedule)
FSU’s Student Life Cinema has an amazing staff this fall, who have been advocating a line-up to keep you happy. With a history of advance screenings, huge events and guest stars, you can never guess what trick they’ll pull out of their sleeves. Stop by the Student Life Center and pick up a schedule as soon as you can.
- All Saints Cinema (Life, Animated Sept. 16th) and Railroad Square
The space just south of Gaines St. on Railroad Avenue is home to Tallahassee’s most exotic arts community. Mickee Faust theatre, Proof Brewing, and an entire block of homegrown stores and businesses open their doors the first Friday of every month to a swarm of happy neighbors. All Saints Cinema, on the other side of the track, also hosts great events (such as last spring’s Tim Fain concert) and is prepping for a screening of Life, Animated. If you need some bizarre and color in your life, never stray from Railroad.
Not enough for you? Just wait until you see what spring has in store.
