Finding Your Perfect Job Or Niche

By Nusrat Zeba on July 5, 2016

There are many reasons why you go to college and one of those reasons is to find out exactly what it is that you have to offer the world and which field(s) of study you would enjoy spending the rest of your life in. Some people are lucky enough to immediately figure out what their passions are, they know exactly what they will do for the rest of their lives and are easily able to grasp how to succeed in their fields of study.

For many other people, it takes time. Even after graduating college or even after finishing medical school, people realize they were following the wrong field of study. Some people spend almost their whole lives trying to figure out what they want while juggling a few jobs. Each person finds their “calling” at different paces and different points of their lives. You may have already found your calling and that’s great for you!

If you haven’t found your calling and you’re fully distressed about the fact that you haven’t found your niche, that’s also okay. Before you read the rest of this article, keep in mind that you’re never too old to follow your dreams and you don’t have to have your whole life together by your 20’s! If you don’t know how to find your niche and don’t know where to start, keep reading!

You can find your niche in various ways. Expose yourself to different hobbies, clubs, courses, interests and people. You would be surprised which hobbies and courses you will find interesting! Explore and don’t be afraid to try new things, whether these new ‘things’ may be eating new food, going to a new place, or attending a local meeting based on a topic you have never heard about. If you can’t travel abroad or even travel outside of your state, that’s okay! You can check out places you have never went to located around your area.

Take that martial arts class offered in your neighborhood, take those art classes provided in your local museum, learn about new topics and increase your knowledge on beneficial sites that feed your brain such as howstuffworks.com, pick up that old Rubik’s cube and solve it! Find interesting or cool clubs at your school. Maybe anime club doesn’t sound very interesting to you but you may never know until you go and find out what it’s all about for yourself!

Business doesn’t seem like an ideal field for you? If you have never taken a business course, it may be very useful to take one. You might end up starting your own business one day! You get the picture, just keep learning new things. Exposing yourself to new types of people can be very fun and come in handy. Not only do you get to make new connections but you may find life-long friends who may help you grow and inspire you. Helping them grow is also a special reward! Through these new people, you may find yourself interested in a new kind of field that can branch out into a permanent career.

Usually, your ‘calling’ comes unexpectedly and you may actually end up finding your niche by exposing yourself to something you originally wouldn’t have thought of indulging yourself in. For example, before I graduated high school, I had never thought of being a part of a social justice organization and didn’t know I would enjoy being a part of a non-profit organization. I gave a shot at working for a non-profit organization called STEPS to End Family Violence and not only did I enjoy the work but I also realized one of the ways I can help my community and the world.

So now, I am part of a different non-profit organization called No School Violence gaining valuable skills needed to work in a non-profit organization and working on a cause I am very passionate about. I never expected to be where I am right now because I had imagined myself wearing a white coat taking care of patients almost my whole life. Now, I know for a fact being a doctor and working in a hospital isn’t really my thing (or niche).

As for you, the list is not limited to what is mentioned in this article. The list goes on and on. The key to finding your niche is to be patient and open to anything that comes your way. You may be compelled by society, your family, friends, etc. to follow the same path most people are taking (becoming a doctor, becoming an engineer, becoming a lawyer, etc.) but don’t fall into the traps. Be mindful that you have full control of your life and your dreams.

There are many wonderful jobs out there and the perfect job for you may not fit into the categories that society considers ‘perfect’ and ‘good.’ You may or may not have heard the quote: “two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the path less traveled by and that has made all the difference” which was written by Robert Frost in his poem The Road Not Taken. You don’t have to follow the masses — keep that in mind and good luck on your search!
