Roommate Dates: 4 Summer Ideas

By Kylie Exline on June 12, 2016

Whether you have a new roommate, or have been living with your roommate since freshman year, there are things to know about them. Like if y’all get along, have similar interests, and what they enjoy doing in their spare time. You know, the basics.

To discover their quirks, there are certain activities that will allow the bonding to commence: tasks such as games, adventure, and a little alcohol.

To learn about what you should be doing with your roommate, read below.

Go on a trip.

Regardless of where you live, there are things to be seen and places to be. Whether your closest beach is roughly two hours away, or your pool is directly two stories down from your apartment, there are options.

It is better if your destination is further away because it forces you guys to, a) spend an unnecessary amount of time together, and b) get used to spending an unnecessary amount of time together. While you two (or however many roommates) are there, you can discuss your high school days, your exes, and of course your all-time favorite food. Yes, pizza is always acceptable.

Given it is summer, the weather should most definitely be pristine. Goes to show that you can have a blast with your roommate all while being in the fabulous sun. Make sure to wear sunscreen, folks!

Plus, this presents a perfect opportunity to see how your roomie reacts in hot weather, as well as being away from home. You never know about a dire situation that may come up.

Get your drink on.

Now, this activity can really be done anywhere at any time. Only requirement: alcohol. This is a great bonding experience for various reasons. First off, there is the whole “I’m honest when drunk” thing. Plus, you may possibly see them on their worst behavior. Let us hope for that.

Planning a fun drinking day can really be the most rewarding. You guys can go to random, close-by towns and stop at every bar, or even let the drinking festivities travel into the nighttime. Day drinking can and will do wonders.

Visiting a brewery or hitting up wine tastings can be uber fun too, and a great way to bond.

Try new foods.

Yay, food! This is an amazing idea for roommate bonding because who doesn’t get along when they are eating? It is very important to know what kind of food they are into as well. Say hello to surprise chocolate when you have had a rough day. If they are an awesome roommate that is.

This allows roommates to become closer because they are embarking on a journey together. It would be ideal if you guys traveled outside of your town, stopping at random diners and restaurants, allowing yourselves to be fully surprised at what food comes out.

An even more fun way is to order the other’s food. Just make sure to state out loud what you are allergic to. Though having a food allergy reaction will create another bonding experience, it is one I think everyone would rather stay out of. You are welcome.

You both can even create a list of food genres you like, and visit a new place every week. It is the perfect date idea, especially because you guys are just friends … err, roommates?

Yay for volunteering for those in need. This is not only a great thing to do as a civilian, but also because it offers another bonding instance. Look at you!

You can go to a nearby homeless shelter, join an environmental club (though unlikely because hello, summerrr), or visit some adorably cute pups at the shelter. The opportunities are endless.

This also creates dates that are easily planned. In other words, you do not need to plan for them at all. Unless it is an event such as serving Thanksgiving dinner or celebrating July 4. Those are sort of put on the agenda for obvious reasons.

This bonding experience is a great date because you will see another side of them. Basically, their good, nice, giving side. And everyone loves a person willing to spend their weekend with newborn kittens.

Given it is summer, and likely super-hot everywhere, you and your roommate must find date ideas in order for bonding to ensue.

Good thing I did that for ya. Buy a beer, drive hours away to some sink holes, try random food, and volunteer all at the same time.

Well, you can space it out over summer and your entire roommateship of course. This will for sure make you guys become closer, so prepare yourself for what lies ahead.
