5 Ways International Students Can Enjoy Summer

By Da Yeon Eom on June 6, 2016

During the school sessions, international students seem to flood the campus with diverse backgrounds and interests. US News reports that approximately 30 percent of the student population is comprised of international students in colleges such as Florida Institute of Technology and Illinois Institute of Technology.

But what do these students do when the campus becomes empty during breaks?

1. Head home

Heading home and seeing their family may be the best reward for some international students after spending months abroad. There can be no better feeling than tasting the authentic food, resting in the comfort of familiar surroundings, and reuniting with childhood friends.

However, traveling back home may be costly. International round trips can cost around $2,000 if not planned ahead. Because of such financial challenges, many international students decide to stay within the states to minimize the expenses.

2. Travel

Traveling within the states or abroad can be an adventure. Students can use the summer vacation as an opportunity to explore and to ease their minds after a stressful semester.

Also, traveling can be a good way to find out about one’s passions. Instead of focusing on what classes to take next to fill up the credit hours, students can learn from the world outside of their campuses to find out what they wish to fulfill.

There are many positive aspects to choosing to travel during summer, but the cost is a significant factor to consider. If you decide on a trip, then it may be wise to plan ahead and save up during the school semesters.

3. Work on boosting resume or network

Internship, research, or summer jobs are all excellent ways to boost your resume. Also, you will get more opportunity to know the experts in the field that you are interested in. It is a cost-efficient, rewarding, and practical option that will prove to be useful in getting employment.

During the summer, it is easy to fall out of schedule and lag behind in set goals. For those who require a certain structure to spending time effectively, focusing on boosting resumes and networking will keep them from deterring away.

Unless the internships or summer jobs are school-sponsored or volunteering-based, the international students are in need of a separate sponsorship to support their standing of visas. Because of this, opportunities can be limited for some. It would be important to check with employers about the necessary steps to be taken.

4. Take summer classes

Considering the enormous amount of tuition that international students are usually required to pay, it is usually a priority to get the degree as soon as possible. By choosing to take summer classes, they may be able to graduate earlier than expected.

Although the summer classes usually proceed in a faster pace than classes during the year and accompany heavy workloads, some international students see them as an opportunity to save money and time.

5. Relax and enjoy the empty campus

After most students move off of the campus, it usually feels surreal at first. The campus starts to look like the scene from a movie about an apocalypse. While it can get lonely, it also means that you have all the time and space to do things that you never found time for during the school year.

Without having to worry about roommates or obligations, students can take the time to become accustomed to their home away from home. Also, it may provide them with an opportunity to get involved in the local issues by volunteering.
