For many of us, waffles have been the staple breakfast food since childhood. The satisfaction of a huge plate-sized Belgian waffle with real maple syrup, a light dusting of powdered sugar and sliced berries resting on top is enough to get anyone out of bed and racing to the nearest waffle house.

If the place you call home happens to be Atlanta, Georgia, look no further than these waffle places to satisfy your morning sweet tooth.

1. Carroll Street Cafe

Rated 4.7 stars, Carroll Street Cafe is a popular stop for waffles. It is a self-proclaimed “unique and welcoming Bohemian bistro in Cabbage-town [which] offers freshly prepared dishes in a cozy atmosphere with a laid-back European pace.” Several online reviews urge visitors to order the Belgian waffle, which is topped with fresh fruit and comes with scrambled eggs plus bacon or pork/chicken/soy sausage. Check out Carroll Street Cafe for your next waffle craving.

2. West Egg Cafe

This place has been rated “Best Breakfast in Atlanta” several times, located around  Midtown, Georgia Tech, Atlantic Station, Buckhead and downtown. It will only cost you $6 to get yourself a waffle at West Egg, and it comes with syrup and spiced honey butter.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, this waffle in particular has “impressive circumference and height, [making it] easily the fluffiest waffle … The clever, lighter take on butter only added to that pleasant sense of not being uncomfortably weighed down — especially since its flavorful blend of spices negated the need to drown this particular waffle in syrup.”

What more would you want for just $6?

3. The Original Pancake House

Don’t be fooled by the name — this restaurant offers eight types of waffles! At The Original Pancake House, you can choose from plain, apple, bacon, strawberry, blueberry, coconut or pecan waffles. Most of them are topped with whipped butter, hot maple syrup (some have hot tropical syrup), and powdered sugar. The apple waffle is decked out with fresh Granny Smith apples plus pure Sinkiang cinnamon sugar.

If you feel like a blueberry waffle is more your style, you’ll find juicy blueberries baked into the waffle along with a hot blueberry compote on top. If you’re especially hungry, it might not be out of line to even get two waffles! The variety in waffle offerings makes this restaurant an essential place to stop for breakfast.

4. Waffle House at One12 Courtland

Home of the “Original Sweet Cream Waffle,” the Waffle House located at One12 Courtland in Atlanta is known for their value. A waffle here won’t cost you much money, and you’ll be able to get flavors such as chocolate chip or peanut butter literally any time of day (Waffle House is open 24/7, every day of the week). It’s been “a beloved icon of the South for the past 60 years,” becoming a well-known provider of all-American waffles and other breakfast, lunch and dinner items.

5. Thumbs Up Diner

Located in downtown Atlanta next to the Martin Luther King, Jr. historic district, Thumbs Up Diner is always ready to serve you breakfast. If you want a healthier version of the classic Belgian waffle, Thumbs Up serves the buckwheat waffle: an “earthy tasting” but still scrumptious waffle. Another plus? They use 100 percent pure New England Maple Syrup (none of the imitation syrups). If desired, you can even take advantage of the restaurant’s “Build Your Own Breakfast Plate” option, which allows you to custom-create a breakfast plate from eggs, grits, potatoes, meat, fish, waffles, pancakes, toast and bagels!

6. Another Broken Egg Cafe

This place offers the classic Belgian waffle with the option of strawberries, blueberries, bananas, blackberries or pecans to spruce it up — you can even get the waffle made bananas foster-style with dollops of whipped cream adorning a syrup-covered waffle covered in sliced bananas and pecans. Based off of the extensive menu, it looks like you can’t make a bad decision no matter what you order at this cafe, from waffles to omelets to skillets and beyond. All of their food is made with “artisanal flair” from fresh ingredients, and the restaurant prides itself on their creativity in making classic breakfast foods with a special twist. You can’t miss Another Broken Egg Cafe!

7. Joy Cafe

If you’re looking for brunch, Joy Cafe offers “Joy’s Big Berry Belgian Waffle:” a simultaneously fluffy and crispy waffle topped with seasonal berries and banana plus pure Vermont maple syrup. Meat lovers may want to add thick-cut bacon, sage and ginger sausage or turkey bacon to their order. Recipes at Joy Cafe have been used and passed down for several generations, and their slogan “Made with love, served with joy” speaks to the way they prepare every dish; why would you want to go anywhere else?

With all these great waffle houses and cafes interspersed throughout Atlanta, there’s no reason to let yourself go hungry on a Georgia morning. Whether you’re in downtown Atlanta or near the outskirts of the city, you’ll surely be covered on the waffle-front. Happy breakfasting!
