Whether it’s covering a friend’s lease or taking over a stranger’s room, subletting is the easiest way to stay in your college town for the summer or to take care of housing arrangements if you’re in a pickle. Subletting can be a hard thing to do, however, after settling in one place for a while.

Here are the essentials and necessities you’ll need to bring to your sublet to have a good time in a temporary residence.

Upfront Payment

While this may not be your first priority, it is your leaser’s. They should be comfortable with letting you sublet because you are a responsible adult who pays the bills.

Ask about an up-front fee or security deposit to pay the original tenant. Hopefully, this will give them some peace of mind in trusting you to take on their contract. Dealing in good faith is extremely important for both parties.

Bedroom Needs

One obvious need in the bedroom is — you guessed it — a bed. Even a simple mattress will work to turn a temporary stay into a quick move-out when you leave. This may or may not be left behind by the original tenant, so have a Plan B.

You will also need to bring:

-Pillows

-Bed sheets

-Blanket

-Trashcan

Other things you may bring but do not necessarily need are a lamp, alarm clock and curtains. Having a dresser, desk, and chair should not be at the top of your priorities list but can be given a second thought after moving in.

Clothes are obviously something you should bring with you. The closet may have enough space for all of your clothes. On the off-chance that it isn’t big enough, consider bringing a small nightstand.

Furniture Rentals

If the previous renter bought and brought their furniture to the apartment, there is a high chance that they’ll take everything with them on move-out day. Be sure to have an air mattress or sleeping bag for the first few nights.

Renting your furniture is a viable option.

Many rental furniture company services include helping students furnish their apartments and homes. Student packages are usually offered and may include living room set-up, bedroom set-up, and the option of either study area or dining room furnishings.

Toiletries

Depending on the apartment or house layout, you may be sharing a restroom. Since you’re new to the living arrangements and how things are run, be prepared for any situation.

Bring your own:

-Toilet paper

-Toothbrush and toothpaste

-Shampoo and conditioner

-Bodywash

-Razors

-Body lotion

Optional toiletries are for your own use and comfort. Personally, I always carry a pack of cotton swabs, a small bottle of laundry detergent and fabric softener, paper towels and cleaning spray and air freshener.

You may not need to bring the little details for the restroom such as a rug and shower curtain if the previous tenant was kind enough to leave those behind. You’re always entitled to replace either if you’re not one who likes sharing or using pre-used items.

Paperwork

Get everything in writing.

Always keep evidence of your lease and any other agreements you made with the previous tenant or lease manager. Did you agree to also pay utilities? Write it down on your sublet agreement. Did the tenant want a refundable security deposit before move-in? Include it in the agreement as well.

Document any mishaps in the apartment or home before you move in. Take pictures of the room, living room and kitchen. If there was something wrong with the apartment in the first place, be sure to document it and bring it up to any person in charge of repairs so that you’re not left paying an extra $200 for something you didn’t break.

Comfort Belongings

If you’re someone that likes to make a real home out of any living situation, temporary or permanent, feel free to bring any comfort belongings. Whatever your duration in your sublet is, you should always feel safe and well in your private space.

Such belongings would be:

-Pictures

-Wall decor

-Posters

-Rugs

-Throw pillows

Dresser items such as perfume or cologne, jewelry, a lamp, and accessories like hats can be seen as a necessity instead of a luxury for some people. Keeping these items in a small box will make it easier for you to locate and move around these items.

Finding a sublet is the first part; deciding what you’re going to bring with you is the second task. Remember to keep constant communication with your subletter and ask them what they would offer to let you use for the remainder of the lease take-over. Be prepared to fill up your car or rental truck to haul in the sublet essentials.
