Rogue One: Is It Just Me, Or ...
So, in the case that you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past week, a new trailer came out for Star Wars: Rogue One. You can see it here if you haven’t already, or if you just want to relive the magic.
Like the majority of the population, I’m pumped. I only recently delved into the Star Wars universe, having seen all but the prequels, but I am here for it now, and will likely see anything they throw our way.
But, as to the trailer, am I the only one who noticed that something seemed just a little bit familiar?
Guys … this chick is The Hunger Games’ very own, Katniss Everdeen.
Take a good look. Appearance-wise, they could be sisters, but the similarities by no means stop there.
Let’s walk through the trailer, shall we?
Meet Jyn Erso.
We know this because she’s asked to state her name for the record. Obviously, she’s in an official setting of some sort. They call out a list of her crimes, i.e. forgery of Imperial documents, possession of stolen property, aggravated assault, and resisting arrest.
Now, think on Katniss for a moment. She has literally been breaking rules since she could walk. She frequently goes into the woods (a strictly forbidden area) to hunt (a strictly forbidden act). She and Gale frequently speak in defiance of the capital. She even broke the Hunger Games by convincing them to let two people win. For both these girls, they were law breakers before they even knew there was a rebellion.
The trailer then tells us that Jyn has been on her own from the age of 15. Katniss was 11.
(Okay, so technically she wasn’t totally on her own. Her dad died when she was 11, and, at that point, her mom goes into a severe state of depression, unable to do pretty much anything. Katniss was essentially on her own, except she also had to take care of Prim. Besides, for all intents and purposes, she largely thinks of herself in a solitary state for most of the series. We don’t know Jyn’s backstory yet, so I’m saying they’re fairly similar here.)
“Reckless, aggressive, and undisciplined,” quoth the trailer.
… Do I even need to expand on this one? In a military exercise in Mockingjay (The book, anyway. They felt the need to exclude it in the movies, but that’s another article for another day), District 13 actually targets her weakness as the ability to follow orders.
… Guys.
Jyn then proceeds to address her accusers: “This is a rebellion, isn’t it? I rebel.”
No joke, I can hear that coming out of Katniss’ mouth. It’s just “Duh” enough, but she says it so un-ironically. The way these two characters deliver their lines is ultimately the same, and it’s pretty close to deadpan. I bet we get one pure expression of raw emotion from Jyn, just like Katniss in Mockingjay: Part One with her “If we burn, you burn with us.”
The trailer then goes on to say that they need Jyn to find out what the Empire, i.e. the Capitol, is doing, before they blow everybody up. Also, side note: don’t tell me you haven’t realized how much the two compound word titled soldiers look alike?
Finally, the trailer asks, “What will you become?”
I dunno, THE MOCKINGJAY???
