Most college students focus on personalizing their bedrooms and outfitting their living rooms, failing to put their stamp on another important part of their home: the kitchen. There are lots of great DIY projects for your kitchen that you can easily and inexpensively do so your kitchen looks that much cooler and feels that much homier.
Here are some cute and creative DIY projects you should consider for your kitchen.
1. Create A Backsplash. Have a landlord who won’t allow you to paint or make permanent changes to your apartment or house? No problem; you can still create a cool kitchen backsplash without breaking the rules of your lease. By using adhesive wallpaper, wall decals, or wall stencils, you can temporarily personalize your kitchen for the duration of your rental, easily reverting it back to plain old boring white when you move out.
2. Make Cute Utensil Holders. You can use one of those freebie plastic cups you probably got at the beginning of the year, a mug, glass, or an empty jar to create some cute utensil holders that can sit out on the counter or your table and add some character and whimsy to your kitchen. Depending on what you’re using, you can cover the holder in a fun patterned contact paper or use sharpies or paint to make a personalized holder for your kitchenware.
3. Color Your Fridge. Well, don’t actually color your fridge (that’ll probably get you in trouble) but add some color to your fridge by covering it in temporary wallpaper, putting contact paper shapes on it, or adding on some fun decals. You probably use your fridge every day and it’s definitely a major part of your kitchen, and turning it into a fun DIY project will make each day that much brighter.
4. Make Some Magnets. Magnets can also help color your fridge and will be useful to pin up takeout menus, receipts, recipes, and other stuff that’s good for you to keep handy in the kitchen. You can easily create your own magnets as a fun DIY project by sticking a magnet on the inside of a metal container, making the whole thing magnetic, or gluing a magnet on the outside of some other item so it will stick to your fridge.
5. Put Up Wallpaper. You may have thought you were stuck with whatever color your apartment or house had on the kitchen walls but you can easily and temporarily put up wallpaper in your kitchen by using Washi tape to give your eating area a fake wallpaper feel. Besides Washi tape, you could also use wrapping paper or sticky notes to cover entire walls and liven up your space.
For a more inspirational look to your kitchen, you (and your roommates) can take different colored paper and write quotes, mantras, and other words on them, then hang each one directly next to, under, or above the next so none of the wall shows through using blue masking tape (so it will safely come off the wall without pulling up the paint).
6. Paint Wooden Utensils. If you’ve got wooden spoons and other wooden utensils and kitchenware in your kitchen, you can turn them into a colorful DIY project by painting them. Make your woodenwares striped, polka-dotted, or some other pattern to make them more fun and cheerful — just be sure not to paint the part that actually goes into or comes in contact with the food!
7. Hang Some Hooks. You can use the plastic sticky-on-the-back kind or hammer some nails in to give yourself some hooks around your kitchen. If you want to hang more stuff in your kitchen, consider installing coat hooks to give yourself multiple hooks all in a row. Once you’ve hung your hooks, you can use them to display cool mugs, colorful towels, cute oven mitts, an apron, or even pots and pans. Bonus: hooks will give you more room in your kitchen drawers and on your shelves while adding some color and character to the room.
Whether you’re in an apartment or house, don’t forget about the kitchen — make that the location of your next DIY project and create a more fun and personalized place for you to cook, eat, and hang out in your home.
