Attention Freshmen: Your Guide to Tallahassee
Summer C is quickly approaching, and you know what that means; Florida State is going to be swarmed with incoming freshman trying to navigate their way around Tallahassee. If you fall into this category, don’t worry, you will get the hang of it. We all know moving away from your family to a city you are unfamiliar with can be quite tricky, but just follow a few of these guide lines to ensure that you are making the most out of this incredible city.
Getting to know the campus is a must, considering you will be spending the next 4+ years of your life here, but once you get to know it, the city is all yours to explore. Start with trying new places to eat. It’s easy to just go to the on campus Chili’s or Denny’s for your meal, but what’s the fun in that when there are so many other unique dining experiences in neat locations around town. For example, maybe you’re in the mood for Italian, try going to Bella Bella for their delicious “bubble bread” or maybe Andrews located in the heart of downtown.
After your authentic Tallahassee meal, swing on over to Birds Oyster Bar for some entertainment. Depending on what night of the week it is you can participate in trivia, karaoke, or stand up comedy. However, if you are in the mood to sit back and relax, you must check out the Student Life Cinema on campus, where they are always showing free movies, and trust me, free is ideal.
Then there are the times when you need a little break from good ole’ Tallahassee. This is when you make the day trip to Alligator Point. Alligator point is the closest beach, and the perfect place to get your mind off school. However, if you aren’t up for the 45 minute drive, make sure you take advantage of Florida State’s Reservation. Located on a beautiful lake, you are able to do fun water activities like paddle boarding or canoeing, all free of charge with your valid FSU Student ID!
Depending on what clubs and activities you get involved with, you will get to experience many great aspects of Florida State and Tallahassee. Just make sure you venture out and take advantage of what the city has to offer!
