Breaking News: "Mean Girls" Musical Might Be A Thing!

By Victoria Robertson on March 18, 2016

It’s pretty safe to say that the entire college population (all females and a majority of the males) has seen, heard of, quoted or lived “Mean Girls.” Anyone that says they haven’t is a liar. Cut them out of your life.

All jokes aside, “Mean Girls” writer Tina Fey is at it again and, in an interview with Andy Cohen, revealed that she and her husband are currently working on an extension of the “Mean Girls” universe: a musical.

It sounds ridiculous, and that’s what makes it so perfect.

Fey and husband, Jeff Richmond (who, by the way, is a composer) are currently putting together a musical script in hopes that the comedy might some day make it to the Broadway stage.

And by some day, she means some day far, far in the future. Like so far, you can’t even really see it. You just know that it’s there and hope that it’ll come sooner.

When asked how long she expected to be working on the musical, Fey stated it probably wouldn’t be ready for the stage until 2027. When pressed on the matter, she joked it would open when Hamilton closes.

So it’s safe to say, we might not want to hold our breath for this one.

But still, just knowing there’s a possible “Mean Girls” continuation in the works should be enough for any fan of the original film.

For those that aren’t familiar, and that have obviously been living under a rock their entire lives, “Mean Girls” follows Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) as she moves to the U.S. from Africa and becomes the new student at a high school run by “the plastics.”

Led by Regina George (Rachel McAdams), the plastics, which also include Karen (Amanda Seyfried) and Gretchen (Lacey Chabert), run “girl-world” and it’s up to Cady to turn things around. However, this becomes difficult as she finds herself quickly becoming accustomed to being at the top of the totem pole.

“Mean Girls” is the perfect pop culture reference for any occasion, and easily became the anthem of every generation that has had to deal with “cliques” at their school.

But before you get too excited, it’s important to note that Tina Fey (who played Ms. Norbury in the original), will not be reprising her role. In fact, she stated she wouldn’t ask for anyone to return.

Instead, she claims she’d like to turn the roles over to Broadway professionals, and while this is certainly disappointing news, it isn’t all that surprising. For one thing, Lindsay Lohan has had a bit of a rough go since the original film, and with the rising fame of the rest of the cast, it would be difficult to get everyone to agree to perform on Broadway.

So as much as we’d love to see a reunion of the “Mean Girls” cast, I think it’s safe to say this is not going to be the time or place that we’ll see it happen.

However, this “classic Broadway” musical rendition of the film is an amazing idea regardless, and though she and her husband haven’t yet finished the script, Fey revealed that the musical is in the works, and that it’s an actual, physical possibility.

Whether or not this musical will hit the stage within the next decade is up in the air, but just knowing that somewhere down the road, there’s a possibility that “Mean Girls” will be a headlining, Broadway musical is enough to keep our excitement piqued.

In the meantime, how about a reunion show that isn’t nearly as disappointing as the “Friends” reunion? We deserve something, right?

So let’s get started on that, please!

Anyway, the film may be a musical. And that is so fetch!
