Why Band Kids Are the Most Popular Kids in School

By Vivian El-Salawy on March 15, 2016

When it comes to being the most popular kid in school, whether it’s high school or college, we always think about the jocks or the cheerleaders.  Without a doubt, it has got to be the football player whose jersey you spent a hundred bucks on or that girl with the perfect hair (you know which girl I’m talking about).  But in reality, it’s the underdogs that are your most popular kids in school: the band kids.

I know you’re probably scratching at your head right now.  Band kids?  Aren’t they supposed to be those nerds who spend hours locked up practicing music and straying away from the real social experiences of school?

That’s where you’re mistaken.   Here are some reasons as to why band kids are the most popular kids in school:

They will never miss a football game.

Face it: band kids are always at every home football game.  They have to be – they are the ones that get the crowd going, the football players pumpin’, and the cheerleaders jumpin’.  In fact, for most collegiate bands, a football game is an entire day’s event.  Between rehearsals, performances, and the game itself – band members put their everything into completing your game day experience.

They travel – everywhere.

Alright, so another cool perk is traveling for away games.  Think about all of the bowl games you have watched on your television on New Year’s Day.  You know, the ones that are overpriced to travel to because of the time of the year?  In fact, let’s think outside the box.  Consider all of the travel hotspots for the busiest times of year, such as Disney.  Often times, band kids get to travel not only for athletic events, band competition/showcases, but to perform at local venues as well!

Everybody always wants a photo with them in their uniforms.

Before, during, or after a game, there will never fail to be a person who wants a picture with a band member.  Often times it will be little kids who will tell themselves that one day they too will learn how to play the saxophone, and other days it might be an intoxicated college student.  However, more than ever, it will always be the family members who clog their photo albums with photographs of their marching band members all dressed up.

They can dance.

Marching bands do a variety of shows that are composed of a diverse set of musical elements and marching techniques, however a third quality to their show that is often underestimated is dancing.  From body rolls to dance sequences by Beyonce or Michael Jackson, the crowd never fails to roar at their grandiose and killer dance moves.

There is something tempting about cutting through their parade blocks.

It’s hard to tell whether this one is out of envy or not, but whether it is a march-over for a football game or a parade block for an event, there is always somebody that tries to run through the formation.

The question: “Can you play me a note?”

Everybody is always in disbelief when they find out that a band kid plays a certain instrument.  Requests often range from introductory themes to popular TV shows, pop tunes off of the radio, and your favorite boy band hits.  People seem to think that band kids are some kind of humanoid jukeboxes with an arsenal of tunes.  Although a lot of the time band kids won’t “play you a note” (simply because it’s a strange question to ask), they still probably know how to play all of your guilty pleasures from your favorite soundtracks.

They get their own hype video.

‘Nuff said.

Face it: they go viral on social media.  A lot.

There are plenty of examples of marching bands going viral on social media between the Marching Chief’s crowd-howling dance to “Single Ladies” by Beyonce in 2014 and the Human Jukebox blasting “Hello” by Adele in 2015.  Buzzfeed, YouTube, Twitter, Vimeo, Facebook, Tumblr – you name it and they have probably been there.

They bring people together.

When it comes down to it, the band is what brings people together.  Marching bands are sometimes the most diverse group of individuals you could find, composed of students from different areas of knowledge, with different hobbies or interests between sports, video games, or even fashion.  But one thing that nearly every band kids shares is a genuine compassion for music and the unity behind it.  Your school’s hymn or alma mater song, whether at a game or in moments of reminiscence, is often sung through the voices of the band.  While bands strive to pump up a crowd or put on a good show, what they do best is bring people together for the enjoyment of music in the moment.
