The social networking site Twitter is operating normally after a number of problems had prompted the network to be down for users during the course of June 21. According to a report from the BBC, users began to report problems at 5pm UK time (noon Eastern time), and issues had continued sporadically throughout the day, being restored according to a later blog post after 11am Pacific time (2pm Eastern time).

In a tweet according to the BBC, Twitter’s communications team said the issue was due to a bug in the system. “Today’s outage is due to a cascaded bug in one of our infrastructure components. We’ll provide updated information soon,” the tweet read.

In the blog post, Twitter confirmed it was a cascading bug. “A ‘cascading bug’ is a bug with an effect that isn’t confined to a particular software element, but rather its effect ‘cascades’ into other elements as well,” the post read. “One of the characteristics of such a bug is that it can have a significant impact on all users, worldwide, which was the case today. As soon as we discovered it, we took corrective actions, which included rolling back to a previous stable version of Twitter.” The social network apologized for the incident. “It’s imperative that we remain available around the world, and today we stumbled,” the post continued. “For that we offer our most sincere apologies and hope you’ll be able to breathe easier now.”

Mazen Rawashdeh, the Vice President of Engineering for Twitter, who wrote the blog post, added according to the Los Angeles Times that the issue was being looked into in order to be prevented. “We are currently conducting a comprehensive review to ensure that we can avoid this chain of events in the future,” Rawashdeh said.
