My Mom Is My BFF

In elementary school, junior high, and high school most of us had dozens of friends. If we were bored on a Friday night we had a list of several eligible buddies to hit up and make plans. One friend is absent one day? We had another one to chill with at lunch.

However it’s like the summer after graduating from high school they all gradually go away. In the blink of an eye, we have one or two left, and in some cases, those one or two friends are in another state attending college. This “young adult” period is such a weird age in so many ways — but especially in the friend category. We don’t know who they are, and we feel lame for not having many and being home alone on the weekends. The truth is YOU’RE NOT ALONE. Even though according to everyone’s social media accounts  it appears everyone has thousand of friends, most of us are in that same boat of having only a couple.

My point in saying all this is in case you feel the same way I do but feel like you are the only one … I have some coworkers, one good friend that lives across the country, and I have my best friend and that best friend is my mom. For whatever reason, for the longest time, I thought I was too young to say, “Yeah my mom is my best friend.” I thought the age I’m at right now should be my peak of going out, partying, dating, etc.

But one day when I was talking to my mom about something ridiculous, probably like the questionable fashion choices at the Golden Globes or what a genuinely good person we just know Hugh Jackman is, I realized what the heck is wrong with my mom being my best friend? She knows me better than I know myself, she is more happy for my accomplishments and sad for my disappointments than I am. She cares about every little detail of my life, she’s fun to shop with, she’s my favorite person to watch TV with, and she gives me advice about everything, big or little. If those qualities don’t define a best friend than it must be impossible to find one.

Maybe five years from now I’ll have a ton of girlfriends and plans every weekend but for now it’s just my beautiful mommy as my BFF and no matter what, she’ll always be my number one.
