How Do You Play?
Ever wish you could enter the world of fantasy and play the amazing game of quidditch? Or take part in an intense battle to keep your ship afloat in a game of battleship? These are exactly the type of real life games the students of CSU Monterey and BYU Idaho have conjured up. This kind of uniqueness has shed a new light on the concept of intramural sports. Oftentimes we hear of the usual sports seen throughout the world of intramural such as basketball, softball, and soccer; so when I discovered that the students at CSU Monterey had positions like beater, chaser, snitch, seeker, and keeper I knew there was creativity a-flowing in Monterey.
For obvious reasons the students are unable to fly on broomsticks so they’ve made a few modifications to the game of quidditch to make it work for them. A volleyball is used as the quaffle and is the ball used to score points, a dodge ball is used as the bludger and is thrown at opponents to knock them down or out of bounds, and the snitch is actually a person dressed in all gold. The rules are the same as in the Harry Potter books; if the seeker catches the snitch the game is over, and each team throughout the game is attempting to score points by throwing the quaffle into a hoop goal. As far as the brooms go, all players must have one in between their legs and hold on to it with at least one hand at all times throughout the entire game. “The games are extremely entertaining to watch” says CSU Monterey student Kirby Riecks. And I can only imagine they are; the uniqueness of Monterey’s intramural sports is one worth looking into.
Another highly creative group of students from BYU Idaho took a spin on the board game battleship recreating the game with real people, canoes, and a swimming pool. The way to win in this game is to sink the other people’s canoes. Each canoe has three people all armed with buckets for scooping and dumping water on their opponents. They have recorded a few segments of their games which are quite entertaining to watch; at the end of this video you can actually see one of the canoes get sunk.

After watching that video it’s hard to believe there’s any water left in the pool at the end of a game. I just can’t imagine how that wouldn’t be fun. So what’s unique about your school? Have any crazy intramural sports that no one else has thought up yet? If so, let us know I’m sure we’d all be interested to see whose school has got the best.
