Can Reality Weight Loss Shows Help Us Lose Weight?

By Sarah Shaw on June 20, 2012

Food chains, the media and colleges/schools are all making an effort to help battle the deadly epidemic known as obesity in response to an increase in the amount of people that are overweight and obese in the United States. According to the office of surgeon generals, obesity is the fastest growing cause of death and disease in America. A majority of obesity starts in childhood and continues throughout the rest of their life due to neglect of a healthy lifestyle. According to Cdc.com, obesity affects more than 17 percent of children and adolescents in the United States.

Many people like to play the blame game and in the cases of childhood obesity the parents usually get most of the blame. A lot of parents today are so busy working that they don’t have the time to feed their children the right/healthy way or they babysit them with television and junk food instead of helping them get healthy and exercise. Children often take after their parents as well, so if their parents are not eating healthy then neither will their children. There have been some cases where children are taken away from their parents because they are so obesity.

Despite the negativity that goes along with obesity, America is trying to help conquer this deadly epidemic many ways. Many schools and colleges have incorporated healthier options for all of their meals as well as spreading awareness about exercise and different diet techniques for students. National organizations have also caught the health awareness bug and are doing everything they can to make people more aware of the choices they make when eating.

Reality weight loss shows also plays a big part in helping to educate the public of different regimes that viewers can take to help them lose weight. Some are inspired by the courageous journeys that contestants have to go through as well as seeing the results there right in front of them.

At the end of the day though, what most people need is to have the motivation themselves to lose weight. As soon as they start to believe in themselves the rest of the pieces will fall in place. You can’t lose weight just by watching a show, you can get inspired but you’re the one that has to put down that bag of Cheetos and get off the couch.
