The Basics Behind The GMAT

By Jessi Stickel on February 23, 2016

The GMAT, or Graduate Management Admission Test, is a computer based exam that tests a variety of skills such as writing, verbal skills, and reading, determining if a student can enter a graduate management program in a business school.

Many college students are familiar with the SAT and ACT exams; however they are not too familiar with the GMAT, so here are some questions and answers that any typical college student trying to get into business school may have about the exam.

How many sections?

There are four separate sections of the test: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and analytical writing.

How much time is given for the test?

The test will take up to three and a half hours; however, there are time increments for each section of the exam.

Quantitative: 75 minutes

Verbal: 75 minutes

Integrated Reasoning: 30 minutes

Analytical Writing: 30 minutes

How many questions are on the exam?

There are a total of 140 questions on the exam, not including the analytical writing section.

Quantitative: 37 questions

Verbal: 41 questions

Integrated Reasoning: 12 questions

How is the test scored?

The exam scores range from 200-800 (GMAT reported the average score is 540); however, this is only taking the quantitative and verbal scores into account. The writing and reasoning sections are scored separately.

The integrated reasoning section is scored from 1-8, 8 being the highest score.

The analytical writing essay section is scored differently. A student’s score can range from 1 to 6, 1 being “deficient” and 6 being “outstanding.”

What is considered a “good” score?

A “good” score all depends on the business school that the student wants admission to. Although, according to U.S. News, the top 10 business schools in America have an average GMAT score of 720′s -730′s. This is something to keep in mind when studying for the exam. Looking up the average GMAT score at your desired business school would be a smart idea as well.

Does the test require a fee?

It costs $250 to take the GMAT, with an additional $28 fee for each score that is sent to a university.
