College can be scary for many reasons. You are once again entering a place where you don’t know anyone. Making friends may be a challenge.

However, college is where you meet people that will majorly impact your life. You will make friends that you’ll never forget. Of course, it’s a bit hard to make friends at first. Here are some tips and tricks into making friends.

Communicate with people during your orientation.

Orientation is the perfect place to meet everyone! It’ll probably be the first time many people will be on campus, as individuals who are solid about the fact that they are going to attend that college. Everyone at orientation is most likely graduating during the same year as you are. All of you will be feeling the same emotions. Since people probably don’t know each other, say hi! Most college orientations end up breaking students into groups. Exchange numbers with your group members and keep in contact!

Talk to people in your class.

Just like you, others may be nervous. Say hi and start up a conversation. Maybe exchange numbers. Not only will you have someone to hang out with, but you’ll also have a friend you can go to if you need help with class assignments. If you’re taking any major related classes — definitely talk to people! These people are the ones that you will constantly see. You can help each other right, since you guys have the same major.

Join any college related social media groups.

Many groups will be made on Facebook such as this one. Others groups, like this CCNY group, will be related to the year you graduate. Be as active as you can in these groups. Even small communications, such as commenting on a post, can help you find friends!

Join clubs.

Joining clubs is not just important for experience purposes — but it can also help you make friends. Many clubs focus on what your interests are, such as dance clubs and community service clubs. By joining these clubs, you will be surrounded by people who you share common interests with.

With these common interests, you will be able to bond with people in your college. Some colleges, such as CCNY and Queens College have lists of clubs on their websites.

Join a fraternity or sorority.

Attend on-campus events.

Socializing is key. Getting out and attending events will help you meet new people. Some of the biggest events happen during welcome week. Many people, just like you, will be new to the campus and won’t know many people. Take advantage of any on-campus event to make new friends.

Communicate with your roommates and suite mates.
