Capstone Cottages of San Marcos is a student housing community in Texas that has practically everything students could dream of: relaxation outlets, entertainment, and more.

If you don’t have a car, you may not venture out of this community all that often. In truth, there are multiple forms of transportation you can use to get around San Marcos and the beautiful Hays County. However if you do need to cross town, here are your options.

1. Zip Car

Cottage residents would be foolish not to use Zip Car, a popular transportation service that is available on-site. Zip Car is a car sharing service that allows you to choose your vehicle and drive it by the hour or by the day — gas and insurance are included. Once you receive your ZipCard, you’ll have the key to thousands of different vehicles, and you can even book a car through Zip Car’s mobile app.

Membership starts at $7 a month, making Zip Car a perfect, relatively inexpensive option for students needing a car for a short trip or a day-long excursion. Driving rates are between $8-$10 per hour.

Students across the U.S. have taken to Zip Car as their life-saving means of convenient, as-needed transportation, and residents can easily access this service if they live in the San Marcos cottages.

2. Capstone Cottages’ Private Shuttle

Need to get from home to class? Check out the Cottages’ private shuttle system which solely serves your community! There’s no reason to worry about getting to school if you live at Capstone Cottages.

Plus, you’ll likely meet new people who live in your community if you regularly ride the shuttles, and this could be a great way to connect with those in your same residence. You can never have too much support from your housing community.

3. San Marcos Municipal Bus Service

Public transport is a great way to save money and gas if you need to travel around town or into neighboring cities. San Marcos uses Capital Area Rural Transportation System (CARTS), an as-needed transportation service. You can schedule a ride request for Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (just be sure to make your request at least 24-hours in advance). Both local and town-to-town rides are available through CARTS, and the fare is only 50 cents. San Marcos Municipal Bus Service is a great way to get from place to place in town or on the outskirts of town.

4. Ride a bike

If you’re simply looking to get onto the Texas State University campus from Capstone Cottages, choose to save gas and ride a bike. Not only does riding a bike relieve stress, but it also saves the environment and gets you to your destination a little faster than walking would.

If you do not own a bike of your own, inquire at your college campus about any bike-borrowing or renting services that may exist for students. Biking is becoming more and more of a desirable pastime, so take a bike to campus to clear your head and refocus before arriving at school.

5. Walk

Walking always works (within a certain distance, of course)! It’s great to walk around town and take in the Texan scenery while also giving your body a small workout. If you are able, walking is essentially the most reliable form of transport since you don’t have to worry about any cars or buses running late — plus, you are responsible for your own speed when you walk, so there should be no hold-ups that keep you from getting where you need to go.

6. Carpool

If your friends own a car and often go the same direction you are going, ask to carpool with them and throw a bit of gas money their way. Traveling around town is always more fun with friends, so ride together whenever possible as long as your car-owning friends are okay with it. To find carpool buddies, ask people who also live at the Cottages, or post in a social media outlet that you’re interested in carpooling. Currently, students actively use ride share Facebook groups through their universities to connect with potential rides.

Between Texas State University, parks and shopping malls, San Marcos, Texas has quite a bit to offer both locals and visitors in town. Individuals lacking their own personal transportation can experiment with the above transportation methods until they decide which method(s) work best for their lifestyle and schedules. Students especially need high-quality transportation to facilitate their busy lives, and the San Marcos transport scene offers more than enough of that to students.
