5 Things We’re Sick of Seeing on Campus

By Kylie Exline on January 21, 2016

Most of us spend a majority of our hours during the week on campus. We are attending classes, hitting the gym, or visiting friends during a lunch break. It is our life for the time being and that is expected. What is not expected however, are those things that drive you slightly crazy in a college town. Below are five things that I am sure most of us are sick of seeing on our college campus.

1. Mopeds/ Scooters Taking Up An Entire Parking Spot

There is nothing worse than when you have circled the parking garage 6 times, have roughly 9 minutes to get to the other side of campus, and you think the gates of heaven have finally opened up and have granted you a parking spot. That is until you realize it is taken by a lousy scooter repping a “Save the Boobies” bumper sticker (not that the sticker is bad or anything). It’s just that, dude, come on! You have your designated moped spots, let me have my normal car spot. Think of it as “Saving my Sanity,” maybe?

2.  Girls/ Guys Wearing Little to No Clothing

Everyone is allowed to wear whatever they desire, as long as it does not cross the boundary of public indecency of course. What I do not appreciate is when you are wearing volleyball shorts and then sitting in a chair that I have to spend over an hour sitting in immediately after you. Is it wrong to wish that I do not have to suffer in your transferred germs? This is me asking nicely.

3. Bikers that Ignore Your Existence

We get it. We all have to get to class, work, or our bed which is calling our names. That does not mean, however, ignoring my very obvious presence. There are sidewalks for a reason. There are also sayings such as “Coming through” or “Excuse me.” Chivalry is not dead, at least I am hoping it is not. So acknowledge my existence and I will certainly move out of your way, biker guy, because honestly, who wants to get hit by you anyway?

 4. Greek Life Affiliated Letters

Not that Greek Life is the worst thing to ever prevail, but it is exhausting at times. Especially for someone that only sees it from the outside. It seems that everywhere you look, there are Greek letters adorning a vehicle, sweater, laptop… basically anything you can imagine. It would not be so bad if others did not expect you to know each individual fraternity or sorority by name. Because if we are playing by those rules, I expect you to name each NFL team by its division. Seem fair?

Greek Life.

5. Littering Should Not Be a Thing

It is no secret that our campus recycles. Regardless of where you look, there is sure to be evident bins labeled “Plastics, Cans, or Paper.” So why then do we continuously see granola bar wrappers decorating our lawns, red solo cups sitting atop statues, and let us not forget fliers for bands performing in bars floating in our beautiful fountains? We must stop the madness and throw our trash away. Our parents would be proud.

Being on campus consistently, there are numerous things that make us love being there. There are though those few things that really grind our gears. They may not all be easy fixes, but they can definitely someday be changed. Let us start with the easy tasks, like maybe holding the door open for the person behind you. Or even saying “thank you” when they do. Change is coming people!
