You’ve landed in a foreign country jet lagged, confused, and possibly alone. Overwhelmed? Don’t be. This list will help you get through and make the most of your time abroad.

7. Locate your accommodation and set up a new home.

Even if you aren’t quite sure where to go, just get to the university campus. I was at the complete wrong place at first, but the friendly staff guided me (and my huge suitcases) to the correct location.

Once you’ve got your keys, settle into your new room and unpack completely. Bring some comforting touches like pictures to hang up and make it feel more like home.

6. Explore the city.

No matter where you’re living, large or small, there’s always something new to see. Walk around your campus and the surrounding area to get a feel for where you’ll be. Who knows, you might even start bumping into new friends along the way.

5. Talk with an adviser.

Regardless of how much preparation you did back home, it is essential to see your adviser (usually they’ll have a study abroad specific one) to make sure everything is in order. It is possible that your schedule won’t work out and your classes need changing, but don’t fret! You’re getting it sorted ahead of time so the rest of your time goes smoothly.

4. Attend the optional international socials.

Whether it sounds dumb or not, make sure you go to these. Especially in the early days, this is where you’ll make lots of connections quickly and easily. The kids there are just as new to this place as you are and searching for friends. Kindred spirits abound, it’s likely that some of your lifelong friends will be found at these events.

3. Join an organization.

Many universities have fairs dedicated to all their societies and clubs, so the options are virtually endless. Choose something you find interesting. It could be relevant to your major or something a bit more random (I joined swing dance) but joining a society is a fun and easy way to meet people. And it also helps you …

2. Mix with the locals.

Sometimes, trying to break into an already established culture is hard enough, but keep at it! Joining a society will definitely help you meet people from the area. It is imperative that you find local friends; otherwise, how are you supposed to learn about the place you’re staying?

These people are gold mines of information about all ways of life. It will be tempting to stay in your comfort zone of people from your home country (lots of Americans do this) but venture out! This is where many of your best experiences will come from.

1. Travel and enjoy.

You’re abroad! And if you’re somewhere in Europe, it is incredibly easy to hop on a cheap plane and be in another country within a couple hours. Don’t overlook your studies, but travel as much as  you can.

Whether it be other cities in your country or whole other countries themselves, introducing yourself to cultures besides your own is the best way to grow. It’ll be easy to feel stressed and culture-shocked (and you will be culture-shocked) but don’t let that stop you from having the time of your life.

Studying abroad can do wonders for your self-esteem and more. And props to you for embarking on this adventure!
