A Guide to VT Dining

By Gretchen Kernbach on November 15, 2015

It is no surprise that Virginia Tech is considered number one for best college food.

From chocolate chunk cookies to whole lobsters, VT has a massive variety of food choices throughout its nine dining options. West End is the home of London broil and the famous Fighting Gobbler. In just a short walk, you find yourself at Dietrick Hall, which houses three separate places to eat.

There’s all-you-can-eat at D2, a classic coffee house feel at Deet’s Place, and a fast express line for late-night munching at DXPRESS. Further down campus is Owens Hall and Hokie Grill, which contains Chik Fil A.

Other than those halls, there is Turner Place, ABP, and Burger ’37. The Vet Med Cafe is not as popular as those listed above, but that doesn’t mean it tastes any less amazing. With so many options, it is hard to choose where to eat. A guide to VT dining is what every Hokie, old and new, needs.

Here is a breakdown of the more popular dining places on campus.

West End

Located at Cochrane Hall, West End is known for its several stations offering a variety of food. Students can choose pizza, spaghetti, calzones, or caesar salad from Bistro Firenze. Leaf and Ladle renders different types of salads and soups.

Wired makes smoothies and sells fresh fruit. JP’s Chop Shop has London broil and apple-smoked chicken, with your choice of a side of mashed potatoes, vegetables, or a roll. Ribeye steak, salmon sandwiches, and lobster is also offered at JP’s.

The Fighting Gobbler serves hamburgers, chicken fingers, and wings. And, of course, fries are offered as a side. Sandwiches and wraps are also available at West End, including a broad selection of desserts. Cookies, cannolis, cheesecake, and cupcakes are only some of the delicious dessert items.

Deet’s Place

Soups, sandwiches, muffins, and croissants are only a few of the choices offered. In addition to these tasty treats, custom cold and hot drinks are available for purchase. Lattes, mochas, and cappuccinos are prepared in a variety of flavors.

Likewise, desserts such as cookies, pies, and brownies are at your disposal. Ice cream can also be attained at Deet’s, as you can choose from over 10 flavors. This place is good for a quick bite in between classes or late-night hot chocolate on a cold night. Just beware of the long line which can build up occasionally.

D2

Modeled like West End, D2 has a plethora of food stations offering different options of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. One swipe of your meal card and it’s unlimited food for your time being there.

Smoked pork loin is offered, as well as baked ziti and buffalo chicken pizza. The menu is frequently changed to give students a different variety of food choices. There are cereal dispensers as well as self-serve ice cream.

D2 has the biggest range of beverage options. You can get soda, coffee, milk, and juice. It is obvious that eating here multiple times a week will get you on your way to adding a few pounds.

Owens/Hokie Grill

Although these are two different settings, both dining halls are located in the same building. Owens contains a smoothie station, Asian cuisine, Mexican cuisine, a carvery, and “Philly City,” offering (as the name hints) Philly cheesesteaks.

You can build your own salad and even create your own Starbucks drink. The food court has a dessert location as well. On the other side, Hokie Grill offers Pizza Hut and Chik Fil A. In addition, there is a BBQ food station. Both locations are particularly popular among Hokies.

Turner Place

A newer addition to VT dining, Turner Place is the home of the famous, never-empty line of Qdoba. In addition, it houses three stations of hibachi styled cooking. Attached to it is a sushi line. This two storied dining experience also contains a bagel shop, a gelato station, and a salad/soup spot.

Moreover, there is Firegrill, which offers steak and salmon, and Jamba Juice. The only downside to Turner Place is the ridiculous lines at every station. Come at the right time and you will have no hassle.

In addition to these five, DXPRESS, Au Bon Pain, the Vet Med Cafe, and Burger ’37 are not to be overlooked. They offer food fast and quick, for students on the go. ABP and Burger ’37, being located in squires, are good places to grab food before or in between classes.

DXPRESS is best at 1 a.m. for those late-night cravings. The Vet Med Cafe is also a quick food stop, located in the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.

The nine options available to the public are top-rank in preparation and taste. Watch your meal plan before it goes to zero.
