Why Twerking Is Good For The Soul

By Christopher Cox on November 9, 2015

You do it at the club, at church, and in your room in front of the mirror. That’s right: it’s twerking.

The dance was once seen as a moral panic; parents were freaking out at the possibility that their children may incessantly shake their buttocks and in turn become corrupt. I would argue that this fear is unfounded and that twerking has multiple beneficial aspects that overshadow its promiscuity.

We should be honored to live in a time where we can take control of our sexuality and partake in this act of empowerment without substantial consequence.

So before you scoff and write me off forever, take a few minutes and hear me out!

Confidence

Our millennial twerking culture has allowed us to freely express ourselves and has cultivated an environment conducive to sexual exploration. We are granted the liberty to move our bodies in a way that allows us to feel confident while simultaneously revealing our sexual side.

By making activities like twerking more commonplace we accept a part of ourselves that would’ve been suppressed in previous generations. We go out, dance, and embrace our sex appeal. So twerk it and feel fierce!

Body Positivity and Empowerment

Through the widespread popularity of icons like Nicki Minaj, (who twerks flawlessly), we begin to expand the standard of beauty to encompass a variety of body types. This dance move allows us to flaunt curvier figures, promoting positivity and inclusion.

We are collectively deconstructing the idolization of thinness one twerk at a time, and creating an accepting space for people of different sizes. Taking control of our own body and embracing our natural figure is the ultimate form of self-love. Go Nicki for helping us see that!

Exercise

Twerking also makes for a good addition to any fitness routine as it strengthens the hip and buttocks muscles. It combines the resistance of squats with the fast paced nature of cardio, working out the heart and improving your health with each shake. Also, it’s set to music so it could erase the boredom of your current workout plan.

Pure Fun

Twerking is the ultimate way to forge friendships. When it’s Friday night and you want to have a good time with some pals, turn on Partition by Beyoncé and have at it. Just shake your caboose and let loose!

It’s the easiest way to bring a group together and makes for some great contributions to a Snapchat story. The next morning, to make your hangover more bearable, you can rewatch the clips and revel in everyone’s drunken renditions of Anaconda.
