What It’s Actually Like To Live With Roommates
What you know: roommates are hit or miss — you’re either going to be best friends throughout your college career or you’re going to be counting down the days until you can switch rooms.
And to be honest, we hear both sides. You’re either going to find your best friend or your worst enemy. And as cliché as it sounds, that’s actually 100 percent true.
What you don’t know: having a good roommate potentially means you’ll have a best friend for the rest of your life, someone you can count on, someone you fight with, someone to laugh and cry with, and the one person you can be your total, uninhibited self around.
If you find a good one, your roommate isn’t just someone to live with; they’re someone that you’re going to grow with. Someone that’s going to push you, change you and figure out your future with you.
They’re going to be your go-to person, your partner in crime, your everything. And it’s cheesy, cliché and every other annoying thing we all hate, but it’s completely true.
So here’s to you, Grace and Niki! Here’s what it’s actually like to live with roommates.
1. You’ll meet and it’s awkward … for about two seconds.
So … I just met you … and this is crazy … but here’s my bedroom … share it maybe?
2. And after that, it’s like a match made in Heaven.
I love you.
3. Then you realize you like a lot of the same things.
Wait, you’re obsessed with the “Saw” movies too?!
4. And you’ll be forced to like others.
I can’t stand this show. I can’t believe you watch it.
5. You learn each other’s habits.
So if you only shower at night, and I shower in the morning, we’re all good!
6. And you put up with the weird ones.
Why are you eating a jar of pickles at 2 a.m.?
7. You’ll eat meals together.
Macaroni again?
8. You’ll laugh together.
I can’t believe you tripped in front of everyone.
9. You’ll cry together.
“Pearl Harbor” is literally the saddest movie we’ve ever watched.
10. You’ll complain about everything to each other.
I’m so annoyed!
11. Until they’re the person you can’t wait to tell about your day.
I aced that final!
12. You essentially become that old married couple.
Want to order in and watch TV?
13. Your friend groups morph together.
You mean, our friend, right?
14. And after no time at all, you’re pretty sure they’ve been your friend forever.
Have I known you my whole life?
15. Cheesy as it sounds, over your four years of college, you’re going to go through some major life changes, whether you’re prepared for them or not, but you’ve always got your roommate to fall back on.
I’ve got your back, buddy.
16. You’ll go on roommate dates.
Want to go mini golfing?
17. You’ll fight about stupid things.
I don’t even remember what we were fighting about …
18. You’ll brag to each other about your pets (and be pretty convinced that yours is better).
You’ll just have to agree to disagree.
19. Essentially, you’ll be unknowingly forging a friendship that you’re going to keep for the rest of your life, no matter the ups and downs in college.
Literally, you’re best friends.
20. And after spending your entire college career with them, you’ll want to do it all over again.
And again … and again.
The truth is, a good roommate can be hard to come by, especially your first time around. But when you find one that’s worth holding onto, you’re going to be living the best years of your life with them.
And that’s something that’ll stay with you forever.
