By Jessi Stickel on October 30, 2015

Most college girls have watched the legendary romantic sitcom “Sex and the City” (1998-2004) at least once in their life.

Those who have watched just about every episode are inevitable to be beyond jealous of Carrie’s beauty (and her closet), Samantha’s confidence, Charlotte’s innocence, and Miranda’s sense of humor. When we are watching the hardships these four friends face, we learn valuable lessons of being a woman. Even if we never realized it, “Sex and the City” has taught us how to get through some of the most difficult and confusing times in our lives.

Relationships, breakups, friendships, pregnancies, engagements, new jobs, and even bad hair days: Carrie and her friends have been through it all.

Here are 11 of the most important lessons we can learn from “Sex and the City” that may make your maze through college (and life) a bit better.

1. “Maybe you have to let go of who you were to become who you will be.” – Carrie Bradshaw

College can definitely be a clean slate and a new start for many young students. Most of the people at your university don’t know anything about you, and that can be a great thing. So let go of the past and start being the you that you want to be.

2. “After all, computers crash, people die, relationships fall apart. The best we can do is breathe and reboot.” -Carrie Bradshaw

Life is messy, especially when you’re young and balancing a million things in college. Between classes, homework, exams, family, friendships, and relationships, sh*t is bound to hit the fan at one point or another. You just have to do like Carrie said: breathe and reboot. Release everything going bad in your life and keep going because that’s all you really can do.

3. “After he left, I cried for a week and then I realized I do have faith. Faith in myself, faith that I would one day meet someone … who would be sure I was the one.” – Carrie Bradshaw

Breakups can feel unbearable, especially in college, but maybe it was just not meant to be. Don’t waste your time crying over guys who don’t deserve you. When you find the right person they will appreciate everything that you are.

4. “Don’t forget to fall in love with yourself first.” -Carrie Bradshaw

A big part of college is finding yourself, so before throwing yourself into several relationships, learn to love yourself first. You have to love yourself before anyone else truly can.

5. “Eventually all the pieces fall into place … until then, laugh at the confusion, live for the moments, and know that everything happens for a reason.” – Carrie Bradshaw

When things just can’t seem to look up for you, keep in mind that eventually things will get better and work out. However, until things turn around don’t stress out. If you didn’t get into the program you wanted or you couldn’t room with your friends remember that everything happens for a reason and try not to freak out over things that you have no control over.

6. “Why do we let the one thing we don’t have affect how we feel about all the things we do have?” – Carrie Bradshaw

Sometimes you just find yourself so wrapped up in your own little world, you forget about the important things in life. Never let a bad grade, a bad breakup or a bad hair day cloud your mind of the many things you have to be grateful for.

7. “It’s hard to find people who will love you no matter what. I was lucky enough to find three of them.” – Carrie Bradshaw

In college, friends are everything. The friends you make in college will possibly be your friends for life. They take you out when you just got your heart broken, make you food when you’re sick and go test you with your flash cards before a big exam. They become your family when you’re miles away from yours.

8. “The only thing I learned that night was maybe I should have stayed home.” -Carrie Bradshaw

Going out with your friends can be some of the greatest nights of your life; however, sometimes going out in college isn’t always the best idea. Staying up late and drinking the night before an exam can really screw you over, and in most cases isn’t worth it. So definitely choose your nights out with the girls wisely.

9. “The most important thing in your life is your family. There are days you love them, and others you don’t. But, in the end they’re the people you always come home to. Sometimes it’s the family you’re born into and sometimes it’s the one you make for yourself.” -Carrie Bradshaw

Your family is possibly the most important thing in your life, your whole life. Whether it’s your parents, siblings, boyfriend or friends, your family is there to support and love you through whatever life throws at you. Cherish the moments you have with them and never take them for granted, specially since you are away from them.

10. “I am sweet, romantic and traditional. I’m a bit prissy and naive, and I won’t settle for less than a picture perfect life.” – Charlotte

Throughout your life you will come across many significant others and many choices. Sometimes we find ourselves wrapped up in a relationship and forget who we are. Never settle for anything less than your own kind of perfect. Life is too short to be unhappy or unsatisfied with your own life. This doesn’t just relate to relationships, it can also relate to your dreams professionally. If people tell you that you won’t make it or you shouldn’t go into a certain field, keep going and pursue your dreams and don’t settle for anything less.

11. “Life gives you lots of chances to screw up which means you have just as many chances to get it right.” – Carrie Bradshaw

As college students, you know better than anyone how many chances you have to screw up, and I’m sure you have screwed up a time or two. Although, Carrie couldn’t be more right, as many times life gives you to screw up, there are just as many chances to succeed, so don’t just focus on the screw-ups in your life and work on making them right.
