Box Office 10/16 - 10/18: Goosebumps Edges Out The Martian

By Jorge Suarez on October 19, 2015

Sony’s horror comedy picture Goosebumps debuted with a fairly strong weekend grossing a domestic revenue of $23.5 million. Looking at this past year, it seemed as if Sony was going to have a miserable time at the box office. However, it seems they will be ending the year on a high note, as Goosebumps becomes their fourth hit in a month alongside The War Room, The Perfect Guy, and Hotel Transylvania 2. Also, lets not forget that Sony also has the James Bond film, Spectre, coming soon, which is predicted to be very successful at the box office on opening weekend. Goosebumps, starring Jack Black, is a kid-friendly horror comedy based off the famous book series that was perfectly timed to capitalize during the Halloween season. With the film having a budget of $58 million, it still has a while to go before making up the cost of production, but analyst believe the film will have no issue with this as more people see the movie and Halloween draws near.

In second place, after being first in the box office for 2 weeks, is Ridley Scott’s The Martian, making $21.5 million this weekend. Fox’s adventure box office hit, featuring Matt Damon, Jeff Daniels, Donald Glover, and Jessica Chastain, currently has a domestic revenue of $144 million, while its foreign revenue is even higher at $175 million. Altogether, the film has a total revenue of $319 million, which easily surpasses its production budget of $108 million.

Coming in third as a feature debut grossing $15.4 million is Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies. The film did not have a towering debut, with analyst predicting it to earn only in the $20 million range, so it may have to catch up relatively quickly in order to at least break even from its budget of $40 million. However, with its good reviews and decent word-of-mouth, the film will most likely become a more appealing attraction as time goes on, especially if it gains an Oscar nomination. The film, starring Tom Hanks and Jesse Plemons, follows an American lawyer who is recruited by the CIA during the Cold War to help rescue a pilot detained in the Soviet Union.

Fourth place belongs to Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak, another film that debuted this weekend. Unfortunately, the film earned a frankly terrible debut with only $12.8 million. The film follows a virginal bride, played by Mia Wasikowska, who tries to escape the ghosts of her past and is swept away to a home full of dark secrets. Some believe that the film may have suffered because ticket buyers were disappointed that the film was categorized as a romance rather than a horror film. At this rate, Universal will be lucky if they can top at $40 million, which will still keep the studio short, since the film had a budget of $55 million. However, Del Toro is known to be a director that has always been a bigger draw overseas than in America, so hopefully the studio can make up for their weak debut once the film goes international.

Finally, taking the fifth spot in the box office is Hotel Transylvania 2 with a $12.5 million weekend. The animated film was directed by Genndy Tartakovsy, written by Adam Sandler and Robert Smigel, and has a voice acting cast that includes Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Mel Brooks and Selana Gomez. As I said earlier, this film proved to be a massive hit for Sony, with worldwide revenue currently at a massive $267.5 million (domestic at $136.4 million and foreign at $131.1 million). The animated sequel has already conquered plenty of records: best September opening of all-time, best debut for Sony Pictures Animation, and to date its Sony’s best opening of 2015.
