A Technology Debate: Digital vs. Analog
The debate will never end over whether or not digital recording is better than analog. It is no surprise that digital music sales have now surpassed those of CD’s. Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges. Digital recording versus analog has been a topic for discussion for quite a few years. Although digital sales have been dominating over the past few years, some people don’t agree that digital recording has the best sound quality.
There is really no correct choice as far as which one has the better sound quality. It boils down to personal preferences. Analog and digital both have their limitations. Noise is analog’s largest weakness. Another great weakness of analog is the copying process, which degrades from the original sound quality.
With a digital recording, you simply transfer the file. Each copy is identical to the copy it was copied from. Most of the problems with analog are caused from lack of money. With a digital recording, even the cheapest CD player sounds good if played through good speakers.
Analog is known for having some distortions and speed variation problems which make it less accurate, however digital sounds are not perfect either. Digital sound is recognized for being too loud and over processed. Although there are a lot of recent LP’s that are sourced from digital masters, there are quite a few major projects that are still all analog. Some artists and producers insist on it. The battle still continues today.
It would not be correct to just say digital surpasses analog. Most people of the present generation would say digital recognizing that most people in the present time listen to digital music. There are always two sides to every story. Which do you prefer?
