The 10 Best College Mascots

By Victoria Robertson on September 26, 2015

Sporting events in college are an absolute blast. The school spirit, the excitement and the overall atmosphere of these events is amazing, and something every college student misses dearly once they’ve graduated.

And with that school spirit comes a deep obligation to your school’s team. Everyone thinks their team, stadium, mascot etc. are the best. But today, we’re going to put one of these arguments to rest.

That’s right ladies and gentlemen. Here they are: the 10 best college mascots! (In case you are devoid of common sense: these opinions are my own and this isn’t an official list. Sorry, as much as I’d love to, I don’t have that kind of pull. But hey – you can always cite this next time you’re in an argument with a friend that goes to an opposing school!)

10. The Tree (Stanford)

I had a major internal debate as to whether or not I’d be including The Tree on the best mascots list. But after I realized how much it didn’t matter, I threw him in at the bottom of the list.

He’s weird. There’s no other mascot like him. And he hardly even qualifies as a tree.

While he’s not the official mascot, this haphazard quirky mascot is priceless. And as terrible as he is, he’s equally as awesome.

9. Buster Bronco (Boise State)

His head is way too big for his body and his smile is just as big if not bigger. So what makes the Boise State mascot one of the best?

A giant, human horse is running around the football stadium pumping up the crowd. And oddly enough, it’s kind of working.

He’s so oddly shaped that it makes it fun. So congrats Buster, you’re on the list!

8. Big Al (Alabama)

The University of Alabama is home to one of the most odd, cute and entertaining mascots on this list: Big Al. In case you aren’t familiar with this oddball mascot, he’s an elephant.

That’s right, the Crimson Tide mascot is an elephant.

Does it make sense? No. Does it matter? No.

The elephant is fun and unique, and that’s why he makes the best mascot list this time around.

7. Sammy the Slug (UC Santa Cruz)

No, this isn’t a joke. UC Santa Cruz actually has a slug as a mascot. And I’ll be the first to say, he’s terribly awesome.

He looks alien, slugs are a laughable choice for a college mascot and yet, he’s kind of captivating.

So Sammy polls in at number 7. Congrats, buddy.

6. Bucky the Badger (Wisconsin)

I’m sure the goal with the University of Wisconsin mascot is that he’s fierce and strong, but he’s kind of absolutely adorable.

And if we’re all being completely honest here, we’ve all just wanted to pet and hug him. He’s just that cute.

5. Albert and Alberta Gator (Florida)

The University of Florida is home to the Gators, and quite possibly the cutest couple you’ve ever seen.

Albert and Alberta Gator are still going strong, and hyping up crowds when they aren’t snuggling with each other.

Never again will you see alligators this cute.

4. The Blue Blob (Xavier)

You had me at Blue Blob. Xavier University may not be a school you’ve ever heard of, or that you ever cared about at all, but its mascot is priceless.

It’s literally a Blue Blob, as the name suggests. A big, fuzzy, blue mess of a mascot.

But if I’m being honest here, he’s absolutely fantastic. I’d be proud to have him as my mascot, as I’m sure Xavier students are as well.

And to the creative mind behind this ridiculous mascot: absolutely brilliant, friend. I would love to meet you.

3. Uga (Georgia)

The University of Georgia is home to the cutest mascot ever: Uga the bulldog. The actual bulldog.

Who doesn’t love the wrinkly mess that is a bulldog? They’re lovable, they’re adorable and most importantly, they’re dogs. Really, that’s all you need in a mascot right there.

2. Big Red (WKU)

Big Red, the Western Kentucky University mascot, is one of the weirdest I’ve ever seen, but that’s what makes him so great and why he ranks second on this list.

He’s oddly shaped, he wears gym shoes and his mouth is absolutely huge. How can you not like the weird red mascot?

1. Super Frog (TCU)

The Texas Christian University Horned Frogs have one of my absolute favorite college mascots: Super Frog.

He may sound like a superhero, and he probably is one, but he’s definitely the coolest college mascot there is.

Plus, you can follow him on Facebook! It doesn’t get much better than that.

So there you have it people, the 10 best college mascots. So if your school made the list, congratulations on your new bragging rights!

If not, then I’m sorry. But seriously, what is a Hawkeye? And what kind of a mascot is the Fighting Illini?

Exactly.
