Storage Ideas for Dorm Rooms

By Jessica Mahmoud on August 5, 2015

As someone super excited to live on campus, I’ve been spending a good amount of time thinking about how I’m going to decorate, but also how I’ll organize everything. With so much stuff in such a small space, organization is essential. Of course, there is a fun part of finding clever ways and unique touches to your new room.

Here’s some of the ideas I have for my dorm.

1. For shoes: Storage bins

When I learned there’s room under my bed for things, I thought about getting an under-the-bed shoe organizer. Then, I thought that was a little too unoriginal and went for fun storage bins instead. I don’t have too many, but the way I see it, summer/fall shoes don’t take up too much room.

Since it’s not cold yet, you won’t be worrying about knee high boots or snow boots, so I think boxes will work fine. I found these cool printed ones that match my comforter.

2. For makeup brushes: Beads in a glass jar

This is a total Tumblr everyone-does-it craft, but I think it’s really neat. There’s definitely ways to make it your own, if you find cool beads and a fun jar. This one was thrifted and made from tissue paper, I think, so I don’t think I’ll see it anywhere else. The way it keeps makeup brushes up straight is handy for busy mornings. It’s also great for other makeup pieces like combs or even eyeliners.

3. For dirty clothes: Embroidery hoop DIY hamper

College obviously means doing your own laundry, so you’ll need a hamper or something to hold your dirty clothes in. I found a really cute one at Victoria Secret but it was like $34, which is way too much. A good trick I’ve learned for making the most of small spaces is going vertical rather than horizontal.

So rather than having a large circle pop-up hamper, you can make this one and hang it on your wall, maybe near your closet. That way it’ll be out of the way from more important things. It’s also a really unique DIY project that everyone will probably be impressed with.

4. For your closet: Attachable hangers

A worker at Bed, Bath, and Beyond told me about these and I think they are so neat. College dorm room closets are usually super super tiny so any kind of hangers that hang multiple pieces in one are perfect. Enough said.

5. For office supples: Desk organizer

It took me a while to figure out how I wanted to organize my desk because I could also put supplies in a drawer, off my desk. Then I found this at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and thought it was so cute. It really holds a good amount of supplies and takes up a small amount of space. I also have a desk lamp that has a supply organizer in one, which will also be handy to hold more supplies.

6. For dresser clothes: Draw separators

I’ve had these in my dresser at home forever because my drawers are really big. While I’m not too sure how big the drawers in my dresser at school are, I think these will come in handy, especially for lingerie.

7. For memos and notes: Dry erase and cork boards

Even at home, I am kind of obsessed with memo boards for my desk. They are perfect for displaying important notes or events on a calendar. It’ll be a good place to put my schedule up for the day. I’m also planning to pick up a bulletin board from Ikea which will be great for inspirational quotes, important notes, and photos. I plan on putting them all up together above my desk.

8. For the side of your bed: Bed buddy

This is from RHL, the Residence Hall Linens that most colleges get to buy their linens from. While I bought my linens from Aeropostale, I really love this idea so I might order it. I love keeping a few things by my bed: my journal, retainer, book light, book, and medication, which this will store perfectly.

It’s especially great if you don’t have a nightstand, or can’t bring one with you.

Move-in day for me is only a few weeks away, so this is the time to get supplies ready for my dorm. These are some of the ideas I have in mind to keep things organized and clean. I hope it gives you some ideas for your dorm room or bedroom at home.
