Your Fashion Guide to Pride Events
If you didn’t know, June is Pride Month. Throughout the month (and beyond), there are Pride events all across the country. Portland, New Orleans, and Los Angeles Pride events have already ended.
However, there’s still plenty of Pride to be spread in major cities: San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, and Seattle Pride events are all within the next week! Finally, Seattle wraps up summer with their events August 22-30.
There’s lots of fun to be had and the big question is: What do I wear? Here’s a guide to help you out.
1. Hat/Bandana
I have short hair so I might not do this. However, if you have long hair, or just want to keep cool, you may consider sporting a hat or bandana at the Pride event of your choice. Try a rainbow printed one or something LGBT-related to stick with the theme.
2. Prideful T-shirt
I’m walking in the Pride March, where we actually have our own shirts, but if you’re on the sidelines, go for a prideful shirt or tank. A simple rainbow top will do, or a fun graphic tee, like something from lookhuman.com.
3. Shorts/Tutu
Most people like to stay comfortable at these long events, so denim or cotton shorts are probably best. However, if you’re a little more daring, try a fun rainbow tutu you may have stashed away in your Halloween costumes.
3. Sneakers
This is probably most important: the right shoes. Pride events are often outdoors, where a majority of the time you are standing and walking. Don’t be afraid to opt for your Nikes instead of those new cute sandals. You’d hate to have to deal with blisters or being uncomfortable halfway through the day.
4. Rainbow Socks
I just ordered a cheap pair of rainbow socks for Pride. I think they’ll look awesome with a cute pair of denim cutoffs. Don’t think that knee socks are only for winter, because they’re cute for summer too. Rainbow ones are best for Pride.
5. Sunglasses and Sunblock
Most Pride events in the summer are happening in warm climates, and are outdoors. Don’t forget your sunnies and sunblock to stay protected, and look cute, in the summer heat.
6. Rainbow Jewelry
If you happen to have kept some of those beaded necklaces they give out at parties, or have some fun rainbow bracelets, definitely wear them! Accessories totally complete a Pride outfit, just like any other day.
7. Backpack or Fannypack
I was thinking of sporting a fun fanny pack at the parade, but I might opt for a backpack instead. You really just have to think of what you’ll be carrying. Just like most times at big events, you probably won’t have a place to put your belongings, so you’re forced to carry them. However, this might not just be your phone and some cash. You’ll probably want to bring water, sunblock, and maybe even some snacks. Unfortunately, these don’t fit in a fannypack, so go for a backpack instead.
While this will be my first year at Pride, I’m really excited and I know that it will certainly be an unforgettable day. It’s amazing how far the LGBTQ Community has come and that now we have the ability to celebrate our diversity and identities for days. I hope you look into checking out a Pride event nearby, and that this helps with what to wear. Enjoy!
