The 6 Most Expressive Tops

By Jessica Mahmoud on June 9, 2015

When asked what I love about fashion, I say its power in one’s self expression. While there is certainly fashion’s creative freedom of mixing patterns and trying different trends, sometimes it’s all on the actual piece. I’m talking about graphics.

Here are some of the most expressive tops I’ve found. Summer is a great time to rock them because in cold weather, there’s no doubt they have to be covered by a sweatshirt or jacket. Be sure to check them out!

1. Band tees

While I could’ve inserted a picture of a band tee, it’s not expressive enough. This tank is perfect because while it also tells people you like band tees, it just generally shows you like music. It can be a perfect conversation starter with someone about what type of music you like, or even better, what band tees you own.

2. Greek Life

If you’re in a sorority or fraternity, opting for a shirt like this instead of letters is another way of expressing it. It’s a fun way that people can know you’re interested in or part of Greek life, and certainly another conversation starter on things like what college you go to and what sorority or fraternity you belong to.

3. Location

Another great way to express yourself in a top is representing the area you live in. Whether it’s the east or west coast, or anywhere in between, there’s tons of tops out there that can help you let the world know, like this one. This is especially great if you go on vacation to another part of the country.

4. Movie/Book References

Coming from someone with a The Fault in our Stars phone case, it’s a great movie to express a like for because it’s so recognizable. Just like band tees, movies and books are also very expressive. With fun and popular quotes like this one, people are sure to recognize it. And who knows? Maybe you’ll find someone to go see John Green’s Paper Towns with, in theaters in late July.

5. Funny Sayings

Obviously graphic tees are a form of fashion and sporting cool ones definitely expresses your sense of fashion. However, this shirt can go even farther to really put it out there. Since Vogue is a fashion magazine, any reference to it lets people know that you like fashion, which is another great conversation starter. It’s also just a funny shirt.

6. Identity

Finally, identity. Coming out as LGBTQ or any other identity can be hard and graphic tops are just one option if you want to be out and proud. It definitely tells people you’re confident about your identity and don’t really care what other people think. It also helps people with their gaydar.

Graphic tees are perfect summer pieces, as it is often a time for more casual wear in hot weather. They are also a great form of expression and great conversation starters for all your summer adventures ahead. I hope this gave you some ideas and that you pick up a few to help you make some new friends, whether talking about movies, music, or anything in between.
