"American Horror Story" Meets "Glee" to Become Fox's Newest Show, "Scream Queens"

Hollywood is notorious for producing television and film attempting to portray college life; it’s also notorious for its consistently inaccurate depiction.

Blockbuster comedy films like “22 Jump Street,” “The Neighbors,” and “21 And Over” are all hilarious, made up of great casts and funny writing, but when it comes to how realistic they actually are about college life, they need a little work.

Nonetheless, they remain crowd pleasers, and are simply funny when it comes down to it. That’s why Fox’s upcoming American horror-comedy television series, “Scream Queens,” will most likely be an instant success.

The show, which has been described as “a sorority show that’s a cross between Glee and AHS” (American Horror Story) by a recent Total Sorority Move article, will air on Tuesdays at 9/8c on Fox this September.

The first season of the show follows the popular sorority, Kappa Kappa Tau, led by actress Emma Roberts, who has previously appeared in FX’s AHS.

The main gist of the plot line is that the well-liked sorority will be forced, for the first time ever, to accept anyone who wants to pledge the house. For anyone not familiar with how Greek life on a college campus works, in order to become an actual member of a sorority or even a fraternity, one must “rush” the house, meaning spend time with and get to know official members, and then they must “pledge” the house for a certain amount of time.

Once the candidate is deemed acceptable by higher-ups in the house, they are eligible to become members.

The dean of the university, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, hates sororities and everything they stand for, and has decided to crack down on the most popular sorority on campus, KKT.

The plot thickens, however, when a serial killer attacks members of the sorority and attempts to murder all of its members (something about a 20-year-old curse and revenge …)

Two of the show’s creators, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, both co-created Fox’s “Glee” and “American Horror Story,” so it can pretty much be expected that “Scream Queens” will most likely be a perfect cross between a quirky teenage drama and a horror story.

From just viewing the trailer, it seems as though this show has the propensity to be like any other shallow television series that will soon be forgotten, with a weak and incredibly unrealistic plot.

However, it might have some potential. Most people probably thought the same thing when they first saw a trailer for ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” back in 2010. Based on the book series with the same title, this horror drama follows four girls desperately trying to break free of their secret stalker, A, and has just began its 6th season!

High school girls, and especially current college girls love “Pretty Little Liars;” they most likely started following the series when they were in high school. There’s just something about the mystery behind everything and the episodes always ending right when you want to know more that makes the show impossible to ignore.

“Scream Queens” might have the potential to achieve the same effect on younger audiences, specifically high school and college-age girls. “Pretty Little Liars” has been going for five years, and is still going. It has been built up enough that viewers can’t get enough, and if “Scream Queens” can do the same thing, it’ll be a hit.

Another reason “Scream Queens” definitely has the potential to succeed and appeal to a younger market is the all-star cast it offers.

The show stars Jamie Lee Curtis, whom younger audiences mostly recognize from “Freaky Friday,” and Emma Roberts, most likely chosen because of her role in “American Horror Story.”

Lea Michele of “Glee,” Abigail Breslin, Keke Palmer, Nick Jonas and Ariana Grande also make up the cast, as well as “Saturday Night Live’s” Nasim Pedrad.

This is the perfect cast to drive the millennial population insane. We’ve grown up with all of these actresses/entertainers. Abigail Breslin made her breakout debut as Olive in “Little Miss Sunshine,” Keke Palmer made hers in “Akeelah and the Bee,” we’ve watched Ariana Grande rise to fame as Cat in Nickelodeon’s “Sam and Cat” and into a mega pop-star, and we most likely obsessed over Nick Jonas in our Jonas Brothers phase (that still might not be over).

Who knows what could happen when all of these big names are put together into one show. The hype will definitely create suspense among young viewers used to watching shows under this category, and even if the show completely tanks, its pilot episode will most likely be watched around the country.
