"Week of Ultron" Avengers: Age of Ultron Review (2015)

Avengers: Age of Ultron, more like Avengers: Week of Ultron, the movie literally takes place within the time frame of a week.  It is not exactly a bad movie but neither is it a good one. It is just mediocre. The movie feels as though they have rehashed the previous Avengers all over again. Nonetheless, if you are looking for just pure action and not so much a novel experience, this movie was made for you.

My own personal critiques towards the movie mainly revolve around the portrayal of the Scarlet Witch and her twin brother Quicksilver. Their personalities were not exactly done in the best taste. Apart from their outrageous accents, both characters lacked any adequate backstory that justified the motives of each character.

All I have gathered from watching was that the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were orphans that went through some kind of genetic modifications and that their family was killed. This backstory does not exactly help ratify the change of heart that had happened two thirds into the movie where they suddenly decided to go against Ultron because they for some reason realized that humanity was going to be destroyed.

The connections between their inner struggle and the actions performed in the movie were muted to a large extent due to favoring the development of the Avengers team over the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

Another odd peeve I had was with the odd scenes where they tried to input humor. The movie never tries to stop being humorous. Even during the time where the Avengers went underground due to the media vilifying the actions they made in Wakanda. There were jokes laced throughout the whole depression episode that the Avengers went through.

One moment you were feeling sad for Black Widow as we finally learn about her past. Then, the next scene you end up laughing at the stark joke of Tony Stark telling Captain America not to take any wood from his pile. The time between the two scenes are way too close to separate the polar opposite emotions to actually develop a strong intrinsic understanding of the emotions at stack for the characters in the state of depression.

Otherwise, the movie predicates itself on the ‘wow’ factor of the action. And, the action is pretty amazing. Avengers: Age of Ultron had its budget banked on each action sequence. Though I have to say, while the animations of each Ultron figure is amazing, the Avengers never felt like they were ever in trouble.

The explosions, the lasers, are all nice and make the movie ever more epic. However, at this point, the special effects seemed just like garnish trying to make us feel that the Avengers feel desperate. Well, maybe not that desperate, since they seem to be cracking jokes every few minutes. They will win and are expected to win. Never once was the movie able to successfully portray the desperate nature of the situation.

This may sound like a bad review but I did enjoy much of the movie. I did enjoy the action laced comedy sequence; nevertheless, I did find the comedy as whole a bit overwhelming especially at the beginning. Avengers: Age of Ultron is a movie that is a bit mindless in nature. If you are looking for some new experience and have not watched the first Avengers movie, this movie is for you.
