7 Most Popular New Albums Among College Students

By Alexandra Brown on April 18, 2015

There have been multiple big name album releases since the start of 2015, many of which are popular among college students because of their genres, and the past success of the artists.

The year of 2015 has included the releases of many genres, including electronic, hip-hop, alternative rock, R&B, and pop.

Here is a list of 7 of the most popular new albums among college students released in 2015.

1. Title, Meghan Trainor

Released on January 9, Trainor’s “Title” was immediately popular, including the smash hit, “blue-eyed soul” styled songs “All About That Bass,” “Dear Future Husband,” and “Lips Are Movin.”

Although entirely overplayed on top 40 radio stations since the drop of these singles, these songs never fail to be catchy, and to get us college students in the mood, whether we’re pregaming to go out, or enjoying a fun night in.

The album also includes collaborators such as Chris Gelbuda, Jesse Frasure, John Legend and Shy Carter.

2. What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, The Decemberists

For those students who enjoy the indie rock genre, The Decemberists’ new album was much anticipated since their last album release in 2012.

Released on January 20, the album falls under the indie rock, folk rock and indie folk genres, and contains songs reflecting current events, such as “12/17/12,” a reference to the date of President Barack Obama’s speech in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

3. If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, Drake

Released on February 13, Drake’s fourth mixtape “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” was an instant success among college students. Already a popular hip hop artist among our age group, Drake’s fourth mixtape includes as many hits as his last.

With catchy and upbeat singles like “Know Yourself,” “10 Bands,” “Energy” and “Legend,” this mixtape offers songs perfect for enjoying at the bar, or for pregaming.

4. Smoke + Mirrors, Imagine Dragons

Because of the insanely popular hits “Radioactive,” “It’s Time,” and “Demons,” off of the band’s first album in 2012, “Night Visions,” “Smoke + Mirrors” gained a great amount of attention and positive feedback.

Also of the indie rock genre, this album includes winding down songs, as well as songs to get ready to and pregame to, which are popular among college students.

5. Dark Sky Paradise, Big Sean

Big Sean’s “Dark Sky Paradise,” which was released on February 24, was a huge hit with college students. With pump-up songs good for pregaming to, especially his hit single “I Don’t F*** With You,” this album was a success.

The album also features other big names in hip hop, like Drake, Kanye West, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and John Legend, to make it all the more appealing to college kids who love hip hop.

6. To Pimp a Butterfly, Kendrick Lamar

Released on March 16, Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly” didn’t exactly contain specifically catchy singles made for being overplayed on the radio, but this is what perhaps makes the album what it is.

Since his last album, “good kid, m.A.A.d city” was released in 2012, Kendrick Lamar fans and hip hop lovers had been anticipating his new music. This new album, which has a different sound than his last, also has a different tone in general.

The tracks’ lyrics deal with what it means to be a black man in America, and lyrics that celebrate Lamar’s own African-American heritage.

7. Strangers to Ourselves, Modest Mouse

Strangers to Ourselves,“ released on March 17, was actually leaked to the Internet on March 7.

Indie rock band Modest Mouse hasn’t put out an album since “We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank“ in 2007, which was the biggest gap of an album release in their history as a band, so fans of the band were pleased to hear their new music.

It’s no surprise that college students love music, whether it’s used for commuting to and from class, for pregaming, for studying or just for hanging out in the apartment. We listen to the radio, use iTunes, or find ways to stream music online, like with sites such as Pandora, Soundcloud, or Spotify.

Right off the bat, at the start of the year of 2015, popular artists and bands have put out great music that appeals to college students, of various genres, including indie rock, hip hop, pop, and R&B, and the year is far from over, so we’re looking forward to what will come next!
