Spring Shoe Color Combinations

By Alexia Gonzalez on April 17, 2015

My favorite part about spring fashion is accessorizing, and the best way to accessorize a fresh spring outfit is with a fabulous pair of shoes.

Spring is all about color, and is certainly the time of year to start fresh with a bright new look. In case you haven’t noticed, bright and colorful shoes are a huge trend this spring season.

The best way to step into spring (literally) is to get rid of all of those earth toned monochromatic shoes from last season and opt for something vibrant.

While such looks may intimidate many women, there are ways to work statement footwear seamlessly into your wardrobe. Check out my tips on how to coordinate different colored shoes with some of your favorite looks for spring.

Pastel Shoes

Pastels are about as synonymous with spring season as April showers. I know pastels are more commonly seen in the sartorial portion of your ensemble, but nothing is more unexpected and feminine as rocking a pair of adorable pastel shoes.

A great way to play up pastels is with a neutral ensemble. From flats to booties or high heels, a dose of pastel on your feet makes for a totally chic spring statement accessory. Pastels also look great when complementing, well, other pastels.

I recommend pairing pastels with white pants or cool hues like a caramel shade. Or try going towards the opposite end of the color spectrum–try pairing pastels with a dark brown or black on black ensemble for an edgy yet delicate stark color contrast.

Nude Shoes

I absolutely love a good nude shoe. The great thing about this shade (or lack thereof) is that it can dress you up in a classic way or keep things on a totally casual level.

Nude heels are the perfect work wardrobe staple because they go with everything. If you had to commit to just one work shoe, the most versatile is not black. It’s nude or tan. Wear it with black, grey, brown, colors, more tan — there are no limits.

I especially love nude shoes when paired with a preppy navy blue and white get-up or complementing a laid back jeans and tee look.

Nude is also the new black when it comes to formal wear. Trade out those tired old black pumps that you used to wear to fancy parties for a sexy set of nude patent leather platforms or strappy stilettos.

Not only will they complement any fancy dress or skirt, the nude tone serves to elongate those legs.

Patterned Shoes

For the fashion-conscious, not much is better than a really good shoe or a really good print. Unless what you have on your hands (or feet!) is a pair of really good shoes with a really good print.

When trying to rock a statement-patterned shoe, you need to achieve balance within your ensemble. Play with the scale of your prints. Say you’ve got some large triangles going on down below. Maybe opt for a smaller pattern on top. It strikes a great balance, and the prints are working together, not battling it out for attention.

Another way to achieve shoe-pattern balance is by rocking some denim. You absolutely can’t go wrong with denim. And while most denim is some shade of blue, the neutrality of it trumps its color, so a one-piece like a chambray romper is a super-easy-to-wear outfit for some super-difficult-to-match heels.

You can also choose very different prints with very similar colors. How can you mix camo, paisley, stripes, and floral? It’s no sweat if they all stem from the same color palette.

Just go off of your busiest, most multi-colored print and make sure the rest of your prints match the colors in it. You will look not only effortlessly but also immaculately put-together.

Brightly Colored Shoes

Along with floral prints, brightly colored shoes are all the rage come springtime. Whether primary or neon, colored shoes are fun to play around with and can take a basic spring outfit to a whole new level of glamour.

A great rule of thumb when using colored shoes is to pull a color out of the top of the dress that you’re wearing, or a hue that contrasts your get-up. Floral prints are great for this technique because they usually have a lot of colors, which means it’s easy to choose one that will work with your entire outfit.

Another great way to pair bright colors is by coordinating your accessories with your shoes. For instance if you have a great cobalt statement necklace, try pairing it with similarly blue shoes.

Always be sure to incorporate one neutral solid colored item into your outfit, whether it’s your top or bottom, to break up patterns or the brightness of your accessories.
