Khaleesi, The Undisputed Choice For Season Five

By Camilo Echeverri Bernal on March 19, 2015

They call her many names, but Daenerys Targaryen is so much more than her titles. She is by far the greatest threat to the Seven Kingdoms, not counting the White Walkers. She is also a feminist icon.

She is also the undisputed choice for season five and the one all should root for.

When we first meet her, she is with her older brother Viserys and is about to be married off to Khal Drogo of the Dothraki tribe near Pentos. She is a shy and innocent girl of 13 and Viserys is short of 16 or 17. The idea is that she will marry and Viserys will be given Dothraki warriors to take the Iron Throne in the continent of Westeros.

Although on the show Drogo is rather brusque with her, she eventually learns how to take control over her sexuality. She doesn’t let anyone talk down to her, and she is even an equal next to Drogo, which is quite unusual for Dothraki society.

After many events and the death of her brother and her husband, as well as that of her own son Rhaego, Daenerys is forced to mature and see the world as it truly is. She is left with a couple hundred people and wanders the Dothraki Sea by herself until she comes across the city of Qarth.

Her dragons buy her riches and fame. Though, ultimately she must leave and make her own way away from betrayal and death. She conquers other great cities with the Unsullied she acquires and frees after killing the slave-master. She frees other slaves from other cities and begins her reign.

What’s so amazing about Daenerys is the fact that she is the last surviving descendant of the Targaryen line, after her father Aerys II Targaryen was killed along with her brother Rhaegar by Jaime Lannister, Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark.

She is the last of the blood of old Valyria. She is also the one who brings magic back into the world. Her sacrifice of her husband and her own life as she stepped into the fire meant a renewal of herself. It also meant that she lived up to the motto of the House of Targaryen: Fire And Blood.

Out of all the other characters, she is perhaps the least distasteful. All she has done has been out of a sense of duty to protect the weak and subjugate the strong.

She has an army of her own, three dragons she has nursed, people who care about her and who she cares about and guards in turn. She inspires respect as well as fear, but for good reasons.

Frankly, it would not be surprising if she ended up on the throne like her father. Perhaps she should.
