Top Reasons To Study Abroad

By Katherine Hupp on March 16, 2015

I always planned on studying abroad, ever since I was a freshman in college. Last semester, I finally got the chance to study abroad in the Gold Coast, Australia. The experience was life changing and honestly the best part of my college experience so far. Here are some reasons you should totally consider studying abroad.

Picture I took of the Gold Coast while studying abroad.

1. Travel

The Best part of studying abroad in a new country is the opportunity to explore the country you will be living in for the semester. The chance to travel opens new ways in which you can learn about the country. Also, before you go abroad, research places you may like to visit along with countries nearby that you could travel to. Good deals for travel are always available and your new school will have plenty of information on traveling.

2. Classes

Although most students do not automatically think of classes as a reason to study abroad, they definitely should be a factor. The way classes are set up in other countries can be really different from the way in which your home university is structured. When searching for classes, you can also find several that are directly tailored to study abroad students and related to the culture and history of where you will be staying.

3. The Experience

New experiences can be gained from studying abroad. It is honestly all about embracing new ideas, cultures and friends. You will have the chance to be adventurous and meet new friends from all over the world.

4. Culture

One of the core reasons studying abroad is so worthwhile is the chance to fully embrace a new culture. When else will you get the oppurtunity to live in a new country for the sole purpose of learning and engaging with the culture? As previously mentioned, travel and classes are a great way to engage yourself with the culture of a new country. Become involved at your school; whether it be a cultural club or a sport unique to the country where you are staying, there are several ways to learn about the place you are living and studying.

5. Independence

One of the best reasons to study abroad is the fact that you can be independent. Your safety net of friends and family disappears and you are forced to socialize and meet new people. Living a whole ocean away from your home gives you a new understanding of your own ability to live on your own and embrace new experiences.

Consider these reasons to study abroad and decide if it’s the right choice for you! One thing which students often worry about is the cost, but don’t worry! Traveling abroad does not have to be ridiculously expensive; schools offer exchange programs which make it so you pay the same tuition as your home school. So, studying abroad can be fun and engaging while also affordable.
