DU May Days 2012
May Days, University of Denver’s spring festival and end-of-the-year celebration, is a school tradition but after a very rainy week last year, I did not know what to expect from this year. Luckily, for the most part, this year featured sunny skies and plenty of activities.
It was kicked off on Monday with a giant Carnival on Driscoll Green. A blow up slide, my personal favorite feature, was surrounded by many diverse booths. There were Henna tattoos, caricatures, and plenty of other carnival inspired games brought to you by DU Programming Board and different clubs and student organizations on campus. The carnival was inspired by the 1950’s and hosted a long line for funnel cakes and lemonade.
Day two had a 1960’s Hawaiian Luau that had a roast pig and professional Hula dancers. Then came the 70’s tye dye. Tank tops and tube socks were available until it got a little too rainy.
The next day was all about the food. A pancake breakfast was catered on Driscoll Green. The talented chefs would toss pancakes at your plate to be topped with chocolate, whip cream, syrup, or whatever your heart desired. Then the cup cake truck showed up in the afternoon. The cup cakes included everything from Vanilla Party to a Maple Bacon flavor.
Friday was the much anticipated Fanny Pack Fun Run. It included neat shirts, colorful fanny packs, and Chipotle burritos, not to mention the almost-a-mile run to get the student body moving. Then a concert featuring nineties karaoke finished of the evening.
Saturday, students were offered cheap tickets to Illitch Gardens Amusement Park in Downtown Denver to keep the fun going into the weekend.
The week came to a close with a bang on Sunday night with the GLOWfest Concert. The performers featured were Sebastian Ingrosso, Otto Knows, Kap Slap, and (Hujje)! The week was packed with decades worth of fun. It was over quickly but the fun week was a great way to celebrate and spend time with friends before Summer break sees our campus scattered.
