A Student's Guide To Gainesville: Activities That Won't Break The Bank
This weekend, put down the books and explore.
Are you a UF student looking to plan a weekend outing, but are not sure where to start? You’ve come to the right place.
I’ve compiled a list of my favorite Gainesville places and spaces that you and your wallet are guaranteed to enjoy. All of the locations and activities have been tried and tested by yours truly.
1) Downtown Gainesville
Located just a short walk or drive from campus, the downtown Gainesville area offers a variety of restaurants, clubs and shops. Whether you’re craving coffee, searching for the perfect study spot, or in the mood for some live music or a show, downtown Gainesville has it all.

I Recommend: Maude’s Classic Café. Perfect for studying or socializing, Maude’s offers delicious food, quality coffee, and a cozy, casual atmosphere.
2) Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo
Are you an animal lover? If not, you will be after visiting Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo. It is home to over 75 species of animals, including mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds.
The shaded quarter-mile trail provides an easy, scenic path to walk and view the habitats. Admission for University of Florida students and staff is $4.00.
Indoor/Outdoor: Outdoor
Hours of Operation: Monday-Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
I Recommend: Stop by the tree-kangaroo habitat – easily the cutest animals in the zoo.
3) Mill Creek Farm Retirement Farm for Horses
Craving a taste of the outdoors? Visit the beautiful Mill Creek Farm, which houses The Retirement Home for Horses. The farm takes in old, mistreated, or abandoned horses so they can live out their days wandering the sprawling green pastures.
There is no monetary fee for visiting the farm – admission is two carrots!
Indoor/Outdoor: Outdoor
Hours of Operation: Every Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
I Recommend: Bring more than two carrots – the farm has 130 horses, so share the wealth!
4) Florida Museum of Natural History
Located on the edge of campus, this museum will satisfy the curiosities of all ages. Bring a date, family, or friends and spend your day enjoying the well-designed, interactive exhibits that showcase Florida’s rich and beautiful history.
The best part? University of Florida students get in free. The museum also offers a variety of events and programs; click here for further information.
Indoor/Outdoor: Indoor
Hours of Operation: Monday-Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sundays 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
I Recommend: The Butterfly Rainforest. Stop by to admire the gorgeous landscaping and get the chance to see a variety of beautiful butterflies.
5) Lake Alice
One of the most scenic spots on campus, Lake Alice offers boardwalks and viewing platforms on its northern side where visitors can observe the area’s natural beauty.
For those who enjoy exploring the outdoors, there are also multiple dirt walking paths that go through the surrounding woods. Keep a lookout for birds, turtles, and yes, gators.
Indoor/Outdoor: Outdoor
Hours of Operation: Seven days a week (do not use trails after sundown)
I Recommend: Visiting the Baughman Center, a small contemplation center on the edge of the lake. Pop in and enjoy the magnificent architecture and lakeside view.
