7 Ways To Make The Spring Semester Amazing
I don’t know about you, but for me, winter break is dragging on. I’m pretty excited for the spring 2015 semester and have some ideas on how I want it to play out. College is an experience that is really what you make it.
Here are 7 of my tips to make this semester amazing.
1. Keep up with your classes.
In case it slipped your mind, you are at college to get an education. So while your 2015 goal may be to go to the gym every day, be sure to keep up on your school work too.
Try keeping a planner to schedule all your assignments and responsibilities. If you’re having trouble, contact a friend, or better yet, your professor. While it may not seem like it, most professors are happy to help during office hours, so be sure to take advantage of that time.
2. Say hi to new people.
I always say college is like eight years because a new semester is all new classes with new people to get to know. Put any drama or bothersome peers you had last semester behind you, and start fresh.
Saying hi to new people can be hard but most of the time, they’ll be happy you did. If they’re in your class, you’ll have someone to talk to about assignments with and complain to. Making one friend can automatically make you a bunch more if you get to meet theirs, which is awesome.
3. Don’t be afraid to try new things.
There are so many opportunities and activities that you probably didn’t know about on campus, so try taking the time to learn about some. You don’t need to go and run for student council, but you can go to the weekly cooking classes, join a new club, or go to a performance.
If you’re a commuter like myself maybe you could spend a night in the dorms or apartments. Even small things can lead to great memories and new friends.
4. Don’t let others tear you down.
If you tell people you decided to join drama club, don’t let them criticize your decision. As a young adult now, you control your actions. Try practicing the act of decision making and standing up for yourself, as these are important.
Along with this, don’t let others take advantage of you. While it’s important to have friends, choose wisely, and don’t let those who affect you negatively stay in your life.
5. Follow your passion.
College is all about finding yourself and what you like to do. Love fashion? Try starting a blog. Want to start a club? Then do it. Go grab that petition from student council and get on it. Want to write? Join your campus newspaper. Want to study abroad this summer? Look into it as soon as you can.
As we’re getting older, we’re becoming responsible to take control of having the best time possible. Your parents aren’t there looking at the club list with you, so do it yourself. It’s up to you.
6. Don’t take on too much.
While it’s important to have fun and enjoy college, be sure to make time to relax. Netflix and Yik Yak don’t have to get deleted. Procrastination isn’t good, but there’s no problem with spending a Saturday watching movies. Just be sure to prioritize.
In college, classes typically only meet once or twice a week, so there’s a lot of downtime in which you choose how you spend it. Use that planner of yours to plan out your days and when you’ll do assignments, and let yourself have fun too.
7. Stay healthy.
I won’t go into it all here, but with the dining options on campus, it’s easy to not stay healthy. A classmate last semester considered writing an article on how he couldn’t find a banana on campus. Hopefully you have or are starting to get around those struggles.
Of course, some of your downtime could and should be spent at the Rec Center. If you have a killer playlist and some new kicks, plus the new year motivation, it shouldn’t be too hard to get your butt to the gym.
In college, we have a lot of decisions and responsibilities that are in our own hands. It’s more than education, it’s an experience, as cheesy as that sounds. So be sure to think of it as a time to make awesome memories and make the effort to enjoy it. If you’re a commuter, why not spend some time on campus after classes for club meetings and a dinner with friends?
Even though it’s not for another week or so, best of luck for the spring semester. I have high hopes, but not expectations!
