I'm Growing A Man Bun
Well, it’s officially the start of 2015, but I’m not here to bore you with that new year/new me bull. I only had one New Year’s resolution for this year, and that is to grow a man bun. A top knot. Whatever you wanna call it, I’m growing one.
Actually, chances are you’ve already seen a couple guys sporting the ‘do that’s all the rage right now. If not on Hollywood dreamboats like Jared Leto and Leonardo DiCaprio, then definitely on your run-of-the-mill college guy rocking the bun on his way to class.
But that’s the thing about this hairstyle – it’s the farthest thing from run-of-the-mill… when I first saw one over the summer on a European guy’s skull at the beach last year, I knew I had to have it.
My hairstyle was tired and I’d had it for about two years up until that point. With the new year coming up, I decided it was time for a change. That’s why I’m doing it – not just because it’s trendy and I think I’ll look hot as hell with one, but because I’m too bored with the regular, and I need change stat.
My confidence in growing one didn’t start off easy, though. I still got three more haircuts before my last one in the middle of November when I officially began my man bun journey. I just wasn’t sure if I was ready for such a huge leap, and besides, there was still a lot of time between the summer and the new year so I figured it would wait.
I would just surprise everyone at the start of 2015. I was also nervous at first because since I’m Asian, I didn’t want to look like a sumo wrestler or something because they’re the OGs of the male top knot and since I have no way of growing a beard (so I couldn’t go for the scruffy/rugged look), I didn’t want people to all of a sudden think I was becoming a samurai or some shit. But I have to say, my hair is settling in just the way I like it, and I can now put it in a little pony on top of my head. It’s more of a pigtail, but whatever; it’s cute either way.
I’m also the most impatient person, so I’m doing literally everything in the book to make my hair grow faster, like drinking tons of water, eating lots of protein-rich foods and washing my hair with biotin-infused shampoo and conditioner (biotin is a vitamin that promotes hair and nail growth/health).
When all is said and done, I think the final product will be a sight to behold. 2015 is the year I decided to change my life for the better, and it’s all thanks to my little burgeoning man bun. For right now, all I can do is stare at pictures like the one below, drooling at the thought of me possibly looking like the guy in the picture one day, minus all the facial hair and the gun.
