By Lola Garcia on December 29, 2014

The Daley Bicentennial Plaza site at Grant Park has been transformed into a magnificent lakefront recreation center now know as Maggie Daley Park.

The park’s main attraction is the Maggie Daley ice skating ribbon, which is located at the heart of Chicago. The ribbon has a breathtaking background of the City’s skyline, making it an unforgettable Kodak moment.

Located at 337 E. Randolph St., the park opened its doors to the public on December 13 when the ribbon was exposed, giving residents the first glimpse of the site.

The ice skating ribbon hours are Monday through Thursday from 12 p.m.- 8 p.m., Friday 12 p.m.- 10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.- 10 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.- 9 p.m. The ice rink is open to all ages. Admission is free, however it is $12 for skate rentals and $1 for locker rentals.

The skating ribbon is unique from the other seven outdoor rinks in the city. The ribbon shape gives the skaters an alpine experience of the city due to its design and its quarter-mile loop.

Chicagoan Alex Garcia said, “The design is incredible and I would recommend everyone to experience the thrill of skating while observing the spectacular scenery.”

In the summertime, the ribbon will be used for activities such as roller skating, and also for scooters, special events and will also become a walking path.

Aside from the ribbon, Maggie Daley Park features a playground area, a field house which will be open on January 5 for winter programs and other amenities scheduled to open in the spring, which include: a climbing park, play garden, an enchanted forest, the lagoon, the sea and the harbor play apparatus for toddlers, a wave lawn for recreation for all ages and a slide crater with spiral slide and wide rail slide features.

Maggie Daley Park enables anyone’s inner kid to come out. Check out a preview of a slow lap scene in this Youtube video.
