College Football Preview: Week 15

By Andrew Musur on December 1, 2014

Conference Championship week is upon us, but let us take a look at how my picks faired last week:

Week 14: 5-2

Overall: 20-9

By Conference:

ACC: 3-2 (Florida State found a way to win yet again, and Georgia Tech impressed many as they outlasted Georgia in overtime.)

Big 10: 4-2 (Melvin Gordon continued his record breaking year with a win over Minnesota, and Ohio State lost quarterback J.T. Barrett in a win over rival, Michigan.)

Big 12: 5-0 (TCU showed up big time and may have played their way into the college football playoff.)

Pac 12: 6-1 (Arizona won in a shootout against Arizona State, and hopes to upset Oregon once again next Friday.)

SEC: 4-6 (Alabama and Ole Miss took care of business, but Georgia, Florida and Mississippi State were unable to do the same.)

Independent: 2-0 (None this week.)

And here are my Week 15 picks:

#8 Arizona vs. #3 Oregon 8:00 PM CT (Friday)

Line: Oregon -13.5

The Pac 12 Championship game will be between two very evenly matched teams. Arizona won at Oregon earlier this year and will have to play like they did to pull off the upset again.

The problem for Arizona is their defense may not be able to contain Oregon quarterback, Marcus Mariota, for four quarters. Mariota is my Heisman pick as he has been scorching secondaries all year long. In his last three games, he has thrown 10 TD passes and 0 INTS; the kid can flat out play. If Arizona was able to pull out the W that would really shake up the playoff picture.

Pick: Oregon 38, Arizona 28

#1 Alabama vs. #14 Missouri 3:00 PM CT

Line: Alabama -14.5

The Crimson Tide has looked unstoppable as of late, and hopes to lock their spot as the number 1 overall seed in this year’s college football playoff with a win against Missouri. Alabama is coming off a stellar offensive game as they outlasted Auburn, 55-44.

Alabama’s wide receiver, Amari Cooper, went off for 224 yards and 3 TDs. Cooper will be able to find the holes in Missouri’s secondary. The Tide should be able to take care of business and start planning for the potential matchup with TCU.

Pick: Alabama 36, Missouri 21

#9 Kansas State @ #5 Baylor 6:45 PM CT

Line: Pick ‘Em

The Baylor Bears have yet to get the love they deserve from the college football playoff committee. The Bears beat TCU earlier this year, but remain a spot behind the Horned Frogs in almost every poll that has come out. Baylor did lose to a sub par West Virginia team, but they beat TCU head to head, so that should count for something. Baylor’s offense will be too much for Kansas State to handle. Baylor should be able to control this game throughout and have a chance to be in the final four.

Pick: Baylor 41, Kansas State 35

#2 Florida State vs. #12 Georgia Tech 7:00 PM CT

Line: Florida State -3.5

Florida State survived another close call last weekend as they outlasted their rival Florida, 24-19. Jameis Winston continued to play poorly and had only completed 50% of his passes and threw 4 interceptions. Florida State has been very lucky this year, and Georgia Tech will have a great opportunity to knock the Seminoles from their pedestal.

Georgia Tech is coming off an overtime win against Georgia, where the yellow jackets racked up 399 yards on the ground. If Georgia Tech wants to pull this one off, they will have to continue pounding the ball. Florida was only able to rush for 113 yards against the Seminoles stingy run defense, so Georgia Tech will have to do a lot better than that. I really think Georgia Tech can pull this one off, but there is just something about Winston; he just will not be defeated.

Pick: Florida State 27, Georgia Tech 24

#11 Wisconsin vs. #6 Ohio State 7:17 PM CT

Line: Wisconsin -4

Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon sits at 2,260 yards on the ground this year. Gordon will need 368 yards in his final two games to pass Barry Sander’s single season rushing record. Gordon may have a tough time finding holes in this Ohio State defense.

The Buckeyes kept Michigan in tact last week only allowing 121 yards on the ground, and will have to contain Gordon if they hope to win this game. Ohio State quarterback, J.T. Barrett, will not play in this game as he broke his ankle against Michigan. Without Barrett I find it very hard for the Buckeyes to pull out the W. I am picking Wisconsin to win the Big Ten Championship.

Pick: Wisconsin 31, Ohio State 22
