Interstellar: Not The Movie We Wanted, But The Movie We Needed
Ambitious: that’s the one word I couldn’t help but think the entire time I watched “Interstellar” tonight.
I had the opportunity to see a screening of the film at the MOSI Dome IMAX theater and trust me, it is well worth the trip. This was how this movie was meant to be seen, but if you cannot make it to Tampa, do not see it in anything less than 70 MM. That would be a tragedy.
Yes the movie is visually striking, but it is so much more than that. This movie is Nolan’s plea to the people of the world to achieve something better. It was clearly meant to inspire a generation and it just might.
It’s unpolished and the plot makes large jumps and is underdeveloped. But it makes up for this with raw emotion and hope. McConaughey leads an all star cast which includes some surprise performances, but I would suggest not reading the cast list and avoiding social media until you see it; let yourself be surprised.
Jessica Chastain and Mackenzie Foy give outstanding performances, but the real stars are Bill Irwin and Josh Stewart as the voices of the (somewhat) comedic relief robots.
Nolan paints us a world recovering from a near dystopian fate and so afraid of the excesses that got them to that point that they are merely existing on Earth. They are a people in need of hope. And this is the message the movie tries to portray, that there is still hope, but we need to get on it.
I loved this movie more for the message than itself, but that doesn’t mean I won’t watch it at least a couple more times in theaters and probably when it comes out on HBO.
This movie is long, don’t get me wrong, but it is engaging throughout. There is plenty of action and suspense and the score is breathtaking and keeps the movie exciting and well-paced.
This is a must-see in theaters, specifically IMAX.
