FSU Student Dies While Studying Abroad in China

By Kendall O'Brien on May 26, 2012

Students are increasingly turning overseas for possibilities of further education, thrilling adventures, cultural enrichment and experiences of a lifetime. Unfortunately, for FSU student William Cullen Klein, his journey across seas wasn’t all fun and games.

While studying abroad in Tianjin, China, the 19 year old fell from a window of a dorm room, said Ceil Bare, Director of Faculty Service at FSU, via E-mail this past weekend.

Klein and 35 other FSU students arrived to China on May 5 and were scheduled to stay until June 17. Faculty has not yet determined whether the other students will return home early. His body was discovered just outside of the dorms by another FSU student.

Klein was participating in The Exploring China program. Students are housed in Tianjin, which is located on the borders of Beijing. Throughout the program students learn the Chinese language and are immersed in Chinese culture. They also receive lessons on Chinese business and engineering. Klein was studying Spanish and Chinese language, however all FSU students are enabled to participate in the program.

Klein’s death is still under investigation and minimal information has been released.

This unfortunate situation should be taken as a lesson for all other students studying abroad. While FSU faculty strives to ensure complete safety, students need also take the following precautions:

  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Travel in groups
  • Keep valuables close to you
  • Blend in
  • Be careful with drugs and alcohol
  • Use only official taxi cabs
  • Have sufficient funds
  • Read up on the location
  • Get insured
