The disappointing reality of "Fan Gate"

The most talked about topic in the Florida Gubernational Debate is the so called “fan-gate” where apparently Rick Scott refused to take the stage because Charlie Crist had a fan under his podium which is against campaign rules. Nevertheless, this moment looked terrible for Rick Scott as this moment is being promoted heavily on Youtube by the Florida Democratic Party and was lampooned by normally left leaning media hosts such as Jon Stewart.

Despite the fact that according to reports, Charlie Crist claimed he didn’t know there was such a thing when it came to a fan being banned, even though the debate rules did say no electronics. However, he reportedly did get permission to use a fan by a letter sent to organizers because of temperature issues. However, on the Thursday after the debate, the organizers and Leadership Florida released a statement saying that there were no temperature issues as it was 67 degrees and the fan was therefore not authorized.

Nevertheless, the fact the Rick Scott delayed coming out onstage and the excuse that was read aloud by the moderators did enough damage to truly mock him as a candidate. Politifact did confirm that there should be no fan. This whole incident on the other hand shows what a mess Florida politics have become.

The fact that the fan is being more sensationalized than the actual issues that were being debated, signals that the campaigns on relying on amateurish antics in order to win the vote rather than winning over people with actual plans for success.

Essentially, people are gaining soft information rather than real information. This is truly sad as we are supposed to be such an educated and informed society with all the resources that we have at our disposal yet we can’t focus on anything more than a fan-gate. Honestly, knowing how pointless the information that is being pandered to us is, what is the real scandal here?
