7 Must-Hear Song Covers

By Erendira Franco on October 6, 2014

Regardless of your taste in music, you have to appreciate a new, original take on a song. Below are some interesting covers of popular songs that might make you reconsider the way you feel about the originals.

  1. Xavier Dunn- F##in’ Problems (A$AP Rocky Cover)

This Australian singer-songwriter covered the rap hit with his own indie-folk sound and admittedly, it’s pretty funny at first listen. It definitely threw me at first to hear his soft voice mimicking the bounty of curse words that this song contains. Regardless, it’s a fun song to listen to, especially after the shock wears off.

  1. Bastille feat. Ella Eyre – No Angels (The XX & TLC Cover)

Bastille has put out some memorable covers, each of them with a unique spin on the original, but this mash-up of TLC’s “No Scrubs” and The XX’s “Angels,” has an ethereal quality to it that makes the song unforgettable. The song also features Ella Eyre’s powerful vocals; Eyre’s known for her collaborations with the UK’s Rudimental.

  1. Twenty One Pilots – Get Lucky/Safe And Sound (Capital Cities and Daft Punk Cover)

Twenty One Pilots will often cover popular songs with their quirky sound during their live performances, but there aren’t very many clean recordings of these covers out there. Fortunately, Holland’s Radio 3FM posted an awesome video of the boys performing this fun mash-up.

  1. Miley Cyrus  - Summertime Sadness (Lana Del Rey Cover)

There’s a lot of hate on Miley these days, but once you get past her antics, you remember that she actually has a decent voice. Her BBC Live Lounge cover of Lana Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness” shows off that voice in a simple, acoustic version of the song.

  1. Chvrches – It’s Not Right But It’s Okay (Whitney Houston cover)

The Scottish synth-pop group adds their funky electric sound to Whitney’s “It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay,” making the track almost unrecognizable.

  1. The Neighbourhood – Say My Name / Cry Me A River (Destiny’s Child & Justin Timberlake Cover)

The Neighbourhood, of Sweater Weather fame, has an alternative R&B sound that compliments this JT & Destiny’s Child mash-up beautifully.  It’s smooth and sultry, but stays true to the original sound of both songs.
