Crazy Facts About Coke and Why Water May be a Better Choice

By Alexander Ogloza on May 30, 2012

Water. Coca-Cola.

One, the elixir of life; the other, a delicious soft drink.

When you head to the cafeteria which one do you reach for, and which one should you reach for?

The majority of you would answer the latter with water – it’s quite the obvious choice. We all know that water is better for us, but by how much?

Let’s start with some facts:

About 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. What’s even more shocking is that in about a third of Americans, the body’s thirst apparatus is so weak that it is quite frequently mistaken for hunger. Yes, hunger.

Even being slightly dehydrated can slow one’s metabolism by up to 3%. On top of that, dropping merely 2% of your body water levels is enough to fuzz your short-term memory and give you trouble trying to read or do math.

The University of Washington did a study that showed downing a glass of water shut down midnight hunger pains for almost 100% of its participants. Talk about low calorie!

Drinking 5 glasses of water a day can help decrease the risk of colon cancer by 45% and breast cancer by 79%. Drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pains for sufferers by up to 80%

Sounds like some great perks, huh? Let’s take a look at some properties of Coke now.

You can clean a toilet by pouting a can of Coca-Cola into the bowl and letting it sit for an hour. There’s enough citric acid in the beverage to remove the stains. You can clean corrosion from a car battery in a similar manner.

Get this: In a lot of states in the US, the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coca-Cola in order to remove blood from the highway following an accident. In order to carry the Coca-Cola syrup, a truck must carry the Hazardous material place cards used for corrosive materials.

Coke has phosphoric acid, which has a pH of 2.8. Phosphoric acid takes calcium from bones, and there’s enough in Coke to dissolve a nail in about 4 days. You can also put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke for two days and it will be poof – gone.

On an interesting side note, the Coca-Cola logo kind of looks like a guy sniffing cocaine, an ingredient that was originally included in the beverage. You can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhUp3X1pdQU&list=UUY-RqnvwpnzuU-2NNphr_Fw&index=1&feature=plcp

So, would you like a coke with that?
