Summer in Tallahassee: Lake Ella
Spending a summer in Tallahassee is not always as glamorous as one might think. The beach is at least a couple hours away, the heat is unbearable and at least a good portion of our friends are back home, in an awesome city with an envious internship or studying abroad. Whether you’re taking classes, working or interning, the simple fact is that most of us will have to spend at least one summer here during our time at Florida State University. This is my second consecutive summer spent in Tallahassee and through some trial and error, I have found some great places to visit, frequent or avoid. One of my favorite discoveries is Lake Ella.
Lake Ella is located on North Monroe Street, a few blocks south of Tallahassee Mall. It’s the central feature of Fred Drake Park. There are covered picnic benches, a gazebo, benches throughout, restaurants, shops, even a war memorial.
I was first introduced to Lake Ella by a friend as a place to go running while the Leach Center was closed between the spring and summer semesters. There is a walking path that wraps around the entire lake, an impressive 0.6 miles. It has become one of my favorite places to jog or even to just walk around with a friend catching up when the weather is nice. There are plenty of other runners and walkers, but it is never too crowded. Many people walk their dogs too, which is kind of a problem for me because I’m obsessed with dogs and desperately want one, causing me to stop and play with one every few feet, driving anyone I’m with a little crazy. There are also ducks and geese constantly crossing your path and turtles in the lake. It’s nice and relaxing to be surrounded by nature when you’re exercising, a change of pace from the monotony of a treadmill.
There are several adorable cottages surrounding Lake Ella that are occupied by a variety of businesses: a bike shop, a few cafes, an ice cream shop, a kitchen store, clothing, jewelry, even a salon. The cafes offer outdoor seating so you can enjoy the view while grabbing a bite with a friend. It’s a great way to spend a few hours exploring the cottages: grab some gourmet ice cream, get your nails done and explore handmade jewelry or unique clothing. It’s never a bad idea to support small businesses in your community. There is also a helicopter that was used during the Vietnam War, now used as a memorial. The names of Tallahassee Vietnam War Veterans are printed on the windows and there is a stone memorial for the veterans as well. It’s interesting to visit and appropriately located next to the American Legion.
Lake Ella is a great place to spend some time, whether it is for your new exercise spot, or a way to spend a Saturday shopping and dining every now and then. There are farmer’s markets and other events held there on a weekly and monthly basis, so there are always new things to discover there. If you’re up here this summer, make sure to check it out!
