Students Start Your Brains!

By Maria Fernanda Pereira Ywazaki on September 8, 2014

The Summer break is over and now it is time for classes to start full throttle. For those who stayed and took classes during the Summer, especially when it is your first semester–like mine a year ago–it might be difficult to miss the differences between both terms. Summer is curiously fast paced in classes: the professors are trying to cram one semester worth of information in half the time, classes are twice as long, or an almost every-day thing. As a complete contrast, the campus is almost deserted and those few who stayed behind stroll to their classes. Market Wednesdays are toned down and clubs and organizations are mostly dormant. As the beginning of the Fall Semester approaches, the campus starts to slowly come back to life. There are more cars and people in campus, and a simmering energy that is waiting to burst.

As a student that transferred during the Summer, the change was interesting and exciting. All of a sudden, the campus that one has been used to changes completely. Swarms of students are in every direction, it is almost impossible to walk through Union in Market Wednesday, fraternities are busting a move, clubs and organizations started recruiting, and so many activities that it is impossible to know where to look next. On the other hand, class-times are shorter and less frequent, there are no midterms in the second week of the class, and even the third floor in Stroizer is full and slightly noisy.

With the beginning of classes, it is back to reality for us students and back to thinking about our futures and the next step of our lives, as students or professionals. Quite daunting, isn’t it? But it will be ok, relax, take a deep breath, face forward and welcome those approaching challenges with vigour!

Good luck to all of us on the start of this new year!
